Hi Dick,

Is it absolutely neccessary to have RO machine? would water softener alone does the job? a friend has a huge "dream" pond with very high end koi and he uses water softener without RO. I asked him about it but he said it's not need it. he took the salt reading from his pond and it's virtually none. He is using a commercial grade water softener due to high demand of water from his huge pond.

I saw people use big water container (probably 2000 gals). they pump tap water into the container, then treat it with chlorine and cloramine removal before letting the water trickling down to the pond thru 1/4" pipe. I tried out this method last couple of months and it seems to work out well.

as the wells had lots of iron etc. before I knew this I would have issues and couldn't figure out why. So get to know your water dept and any reports of info you want!

Chlorine is easier to handle than cloramine, so you have to know what's there.
Chlorine can be eliminated thru a spray/mist or by storage/aireation and then use 24-48 hrs later. the problem with working with municiple water systems is if they add a new addition of homes, discover something they want to kill, they will unknownst to you hit with a heavy dose
where if your spray works on maintenance levels, it will not work for this extra heavy dose and a price can be paid thru the gills of your koi.

as tedious as it seems, whatever you do pls plan for the overkill coverage to keep your "babies' out of harms way.

while to the unknowing, a personal well may sound good where you don't have to deal with something you don't know about, remember water up from the ground usually has a lower ph and minimal oxygenation and the same spray/mist addition has to be accomplished.

ain't being a good water keeper grande?

great job everyone!!! well... sort of... that's about 8 out of 200+ registered users who use drip so far, lol.

while we're on topic, anyone know where one can purchase 500 - 1000 gallon water holding tanks, that are rectangular so they can be put next to the house wall (and not hog the entire side yard)?

Off hand that I can think of would be poly tanks. May be pricey though?

Steve
Those are the same kind of tanks that they use in Tehama and Glenn counties in California at the olive processing plants. They can often be bought second hand up here for a mere pittance (pun intended *L*). Another option might be the black or grey 50 gallon barrels put in series if available space is a problem.

I have a constant flow of fresh water 24 hours a day, at 5% of pond capacity. Water source is from a deep well, untreated.

Constant input in the summer... well water sprayed in. No idea what percentage because we change it depending on the outside temp, weather, how much we flush out of the filters, etc, but it probably 5 to 10% a day conservatively. Enough to make the back yard a mud hole from the overflow.
