Question Are there any other ways KHV can be transfer?

Are there any other ways KHV can be transfer? I mean besides, sticking an infected fish into the pond. What other known ways can this be done?

In theory, transfer can occur through nets or water itself. I am not aware of an instance where a non-fish transmision was identified, but how can anyone ever be sure? The virus is not very hardy in laboratory conditions, and does not live very long out of the presence of carp. However, how it behaves in pond conditions may be very different.

Brett has a disturbing theory- from an atomizer. I.E. Fine spray producing moist 'infected' air from a contaminated water source.
Human virus can be transferred yards riding on a simple sneeze.

The Israeli believe thier vector was the migrating bird. Fishing birds flying from Europe and Asia to Africa.

Lots of ways for those with know how to transfer it. Kind of scary in our times, unfortunately. I hate to be the 'gloom and doom type', but having been around politicians my whole life may have made me cynical but also not as gullible as some. I don't think all these outbreaks are coincidence. JMHO. I think if it were charted in terms of likely hood it would almost fall outside the real of possibility for this many recent outbreaks to ALL be 'accidents'. I also do not think ANY sensible breeder who wants to stay in business would KNOWINGLY ship koi out with it as was suggested on another thread. Something's very fishy here......I guess after observing humans for decades I have pretty much lost my confidence in the majority of them. That's why God permitted the invention of modern weapons...but that's for another thread....

a certain well respected UK Koi health author will be conducting experiments with KHV oyagoi to see if it can be transmitted to the eggs. His results may be interesting!

There is a thread around somewhere on that topic Dick. Someone already did some research into and fouind it could be, but not if the eggs were properly cleansed and dealt with. In other words, it can be eradicated, but it also can be passed along that way. If I recall the name of that thread or run across it I will post it here for you.

Mike, one the real problems is the 'down ward' flow of 'good water' in the Niigata regions. The top ponds tend to deliver water downward when they are drained or overflow.
I also think that the days of random guests dropping into ten or so green houses per day has got to end- at least not without disinfecting those muddy/wet shoes!

I had mentioned to Brady that the heart of 'foundation building' and the lucrative grow out business is the high class auction. That too may also have to end or at least be revised to take into account the practice of moving high end tategoi from breeders in the south to breeders in the North.
It might be wise for shinkokai to start a registration of transfers from farm to farm and region to region.

This thread touches on it briefly.

I've wondered about that myself. I'm sure that the occasional customer checking out the koi gets a feel of the slime coat and moves on to the next greenhouse has been keeping me wondering as well.

In a lot of aquaculture industries, biosecurity protocols do not allow anyone onto the premises if they have been on another farm in the past 24 or 48 hours. You have to be particularly careful of feed salesmen, delivery drivers and extension agents - they will all try to lie about where they've been. Some use iodine foot baths, loaner rubber boots and even moon suits.
