The soragoi is silver ginrin - the first fish I ever purchased from a reputable source. She was imported from Japan about 12 years ago and I got her as a baby. She is my second biggest fish and a good breeder, but due to space I may not spawn her this year. I have five dams available for fry, and will do Goshiki, kohaku, showa, utsuri and doits sanke. Well that is the plan at least, if they go that looks like all I have space for. I have a total of about 5 million litres of water, with nearly half of it being one big pond in which I am growing out my best from last year.

I'll keep you posted on the spawnings and the outcome.

Here is a pic of my Utsuri that I spawned last year with a showa, and a pic of some of the young koi at 6 months old. They are doing very well now, I have only kept about 20 or so back. The last pic is a tancho showa from that same spawning, I have about five of them, but I think that the one in that last pic is probably one of the nicest I have bred so far. One other has a larger tancho, and may be better in the future. The third pic is one of the female kohaku I use to breed with. I will use her older sister for this year though, as the one in the pic spawned 6 months ago already, and she will be rested for sure.

Last year though, I kept all my utsuri fry, bad move, but this year I have built a better hatchery facility and will feep the fry there for 4 days, and then only grow out the black fry. I trust i will get more utsuri like that. I will also be using a different male, the Showa threw too much red, and spoiled a lot of them last year.

Thanks for the interest.
Paul

Mike always gives me a bad time about my phoenetics (mispellings) but I thought it might be fun to look at how many ways you can pronounce goshiki.

I've heard lots of americans pronounce it "GO-Shee-Key "

Some of my Brit koi kichi's say it this way...."Gosh-kee"

since this is pretty much an international board, any other way to say it ?

Go-Shee-key

When I got my Go-shee-key from mr Hiroi, he sold me a gosh-ki. Or even a goshki. The quicker you say it the better in Japan, and since they produced it, I guess we should oblige them in that! Consider us lucky we dont have to write it in Japanese.

As they say in Japan,
bibi 4now, (bye-bye for now)

So Paul, with a name like emerald koi will you be specializing in breeding green chagoi or midorigoi?

A question submitted from someone who lives in the emerald city (Seattle)

EmeraldKoi

Well it goes like this ... The smallholding I got fro the koi project is in a small area known as Emerald Hill. We are in one of the greenest areas in the world, hence the name. One of my competition is called 'platinum koi', so Emerald Koi seemed to be the way to go. The area is primarily on building sand, which is mined there, no good for dams, hence the liners.

Send me a nice emerald and I'll send you some sand!

I have one 'midori' (but Im not sure if she is really a true midori), she is growing like crazy, but seems to be losing the green and turning more to pale yellow. They do that I believe. I tried breeding them two yrs back from doitz ogon to sushui, but the ogon turned out to be from hariwake. Dont try that at home. This last year I spawned my 'midori' who should be sterile? with a doitz purachina, who I think was also from hariwaki line. I got a few greeish babies out and am growing them to see what thery do, but again, three fish from thousands. Its really too difficult.

The greenish chagoi I hate, I throw them all away. I only keep the light gold or coppery ones.

I treid to spawn the first fish yesterday, but we had a really cold snap and nothing happened, despite using a hormone injection the evening before. I'll have to wait for it to warm up a bit more.
