Breeding Goshiki

I am a hobby breeder with some fairly decent breeding facilities at this stage. I most want to breed Goshiki, and have purchased a nice pair on my last trip to Japan. (Hiroi male and Torazzo female) However, the female spawned on arrival here, the other side of the globe, during our mid-winter , which was her Japan Summer! Unfortunately, she does not seen to have eggs now ... (6 months later). She is also young, about 2 1/2 yrs I guess. I plane to spawn in a months time, and want some advice in case she does not spawn.

Question ... I can use the male goshiki for sure, but what is my next best bet for a female. I have a moderate koromo female, 3 yrs old, fat with eggs. I also have a very good female kohaku, from Nasoshi, also with eggs. I also have a few middle of the range kohaku, but would like to use my best Nagoshi female with a Nagoshi male for pure kohaku line in another facility if possible.

What will I get with a Goshiki male and a Kohaku female as opposed to a Goshiki male with a Kokromo female. I dont have any asagi females ready to spawn.

I also have a very full gin suragoi female, about 75 cm amd a good breeder. What would she produce with a male goshiki??

Any advice will be appreciated.

I do not know enough about breeding to give advice here, but I would love to see the results from breeding the male with all of the females you listed.

I would like to as well, but only have five breeding ponds, and only one isd for the goshiki, so its one at a time. If I mix the females up, I wont know who is from who, and that will be no good.

Truth be told though, when they all start spawning I am out with my net to add more fish than I planned to, with my wife close behind telling me to stick to my plan. This year i'm going to try to be good and stick with one male and one female per pond.

rest your goshiki female and let her rebuild. She is very young and you have time. Use the koromo...

Could you possibly post pics of the koi you plan to breed? Seeing them helps with suggesting selection more than picking variety by name. Also knowing what your parent stock came out of helps as well. It's a hard choice when crossing to a different variety, as you well know!

Thanks Marie

I have attached a small jpg pic of the goshiki pair I intend to use. The male is from Hosokai, and the female from Torazzo. The pics are not great, but give a good idea. The goshiki are about the same size, small and young at about 40cm or so.

I have also added the dainich showa pair (that will be my main line for this year), as they are big fish already, and should produce a good number of fry to choose from. The female was 74 cm at the beginning of the year, and the male is probably nearing 50 cm, but fine to spawn with by now. I have a 700 000 litre hatchery dedicated to the showa pair, so can probably put at least 4000 fry at first cull into it, and then further cull from two months or so onwards again. I hope to get fewer fish of a good quality tham thousands of rejects eating me out of house and home!

I dont have a pic handy of the koromo that is an option to the goshiki female, but she is not particularly fantastic. She is home bred out of kohaku, so I dont know how good the babies would be. First prize is to use the line if I possibly can.

both sets look very good quality...the female goshki looks too slim to spawn though you never know, id give it a try and if no luck i think you will get some great showa to keep you busy...good luck.

Bummer your goshiki female isn't ready--they're a nice pair. If I were to choose from your other ripe females I'd probably lean towards the male goshiki/female kohaku cross as next choice. I say this not based on experience in breeding koi but on gut instinct. I'd want to limit sumi and enhance brightness, hoping for a greater contrast in netting/ground color. I'd want to go for better hi plates. Kohaku would seem the most logical direction to go in order to accomplish this.

A soragoi cross would also be interesting, but I would anticipate a lot of greylings to cull. Still, there could be some unusual ochiba-like offspring one would think (and you know I'm always thinking that way *L*).

Would love to hear from some breeders who have actually done these crosses and what the outcomes were.

Nice showa. I have a soft spot in my heart for the showas and will love to see what these produce.

Ill try to spawn these Goshiki

Thanks for all the replies... I have decided to hold the pair of Goshiki back till the others have spawned, and then try them when the weather is hotter and the days longer, probably the week or two after the others spawn. I also have ordrerd some gonadotrophin stimulant which will ensure that if she has eggs, she will spawn. Only then if that fails will I do a cross breed with the kohaku or koromo.

If I get a crop that hatches, Ill post it and send some pics of the results. The reason I looked at the soragoi is that she has a great body shape, and produces beautiful gin on the offspring. I have produced a few gin ochiba, gin kohaku etc from her before, and wondered if she would throw a gin Goshiki. If she did, they would be very few in number, and yes, most babies would be grey. What worries me about them is that they can get dark patches when they are older, (from the chagoi line in her) but the silvery gin Goshiki are very pretty fish and I'd love to see if thats one way to produce them ???

We will see who comes up with the eggs first !

Ill keep it posted.

Spawning should be in mid to late September for us, so by the end of next month I will have a result.

Will love to hear how it all goes, so please do keep us posted. I'm especially interested in what your soragoi will produce--she sounds gorgeous. Is she a grey or blue ginrin? So hard to find a good blue...
