Pronounciation

In another thread, DickB asked about alternative pronunciations for "Goshiki". ...Often pronounced go-she-key by hobbyists, but pronounced as two syllables: goughsh-key (with a long "o") by Japanophiles.

Another I hear pronounced differently is "Matsunosuke". Some hobbyists try to pronounce all the letters, and it becomes: mat-su-no-su-key. But the "u" is often silent in anglicized Japanese, indicating a syllable break and change in emphasis. Those who have dealt in Japan pronounce it more like: mats-nas-key.

Any takers for pronouncing: Oranje ?

Hi Mike,

The pronunciation is more like "go-shkey" for goshiki, and "mats-no-skay" for Matsunosuke.

I have this CD I play in my car. I got it at a Chic Fila(sp?). Believe it or not it is very helpful with pronounciation. Dick is right for "Orr Ren Gee". One word I thought was interesting was white- "She Roy". A bunch of words are the same or similar- "Knif-A" "Fork" "Spoon" "Main Course" "Napkin" with just a slightly different inflection.

Mike, do you ever think that different Japanese say the same word a little differently?

Does this voice file sound like yours? http://www.koiid.com/cd/sound/s16.wav

Thanks, Brian! ... Ever notice how there are sounds in Japanese that are more like those in Russian than in romance languages? Can't get my tongue around them.

BB,

did you ever check Joëls site? It's great!

Thanx Joël, I've enjoyed discovering it years ago, and still occasionally visit.
