So-o-o-o, what are you known for?

Hi Folks,

There are many who frequent this board who make a noticiable and definable contribution to the koi keeping hobby. An obvious example is the humble man, Dick Benbow, no horn tooter himself, who applies himself to all of the shows around his location with enthusiasm, and who has, of course, opened much blue knowledge to us all. He is a contributor in what seems to be an entirely positive way.

There are many times while I am slogging koi crap around that I picture the contribution I'd like to make. Developing and dispersing a design for an efficient and convenient home built filter system is my goal. I know. It has been done. And redone. Like at my house. I mean something really cool. Laugh or snicker, it's OK. It's what I have in mind for my contribution. Not so that I could name it the Windowman Wonder Filter, just so that I could give back.

Do any of you have this kind of goal?

Mickey the windowman

Talking

I guess for me it would be to show how a VERY ordinary person on a budget can still have an attractive, healthy pond. It takes a lot of sweat, but the rewards are there

Larry and Mickey

You're idea(s) sound great. Mickey, it would be a very good thing if you could provide a simplistic yet sophisticated approach for the newer (and older) hobbyists on the board to learn and implement a PROPER filtration system before building their dream pond. Would certainly save a lot of money and headaches in the long run.

Larry, most won't admit it cuz they don't want to sound cheap, but I'm sure everyone would like to save money in this hobby. A little bit of blood sweat and tears go a long way towards appreciation of your labor when it's done right!

Agree

Mick, I wonder what Leonardo would make if he was given all the knowledge we have about filtration? I think his thought process is the key for advancement..........Good luck, I'm with ya, the water is truly the magic of a koi pond.

Thumbs up Thanks Mike

There is a great deal of satisfaction from being able to stand back and see what you've accomplished with your own four hands (mine and my wife's ). Our pond was dug by us with shovels. We gathered all of the stones, mixed the mortar & laid the walls, plumbed the falls and stream, installed the liner, did the landscaping (added a bit more of that this morning ) designed and built the filtration (with lots of help from reading here and elsewhere ) and over half the Koi were born right here in our own back yard . This hobby can be enjoyed by anyone if they choose to make it happen

Best known for?.......I would want to be known as just a hobbyist who did the hobby the best way he could and helped others with understanding koi quality.

Wow..a question that is really making me think. Right now, I'm a guy with a decent eye for small koi....who messes up his pond an awful lot!!! But, I am younger than many here (37) and keeping fish for 27 years..koi for 7+ yrs. I study all koi subjects like I am back in school..and have a desire to know EVERYTHING!!! It is my nature to want to know everything about any interests I have. I am hoping to be part of the future of this great hobby...maybe a few grand champions, maybe a judge or kha one day. I look back at my old Koiusa magazine issues. When Dr. Gene Ewy was kicking butt in the USA and Japan with one outstanding koi after another. That man must have had an incredible eye for quality. Respected as a competitor and a judge. Definitely something to shoot for as a hobbyist. I guess that's what I would like to be known for one day.

Hopefully I'll be known for being the Little Newbie That Could.

Could what? Start the hobby on an anorexic budget while keeping pristine water conditions in largely experimental ponds with the eventual outcome being the establishment of an Ochiba Shigure breeding program that contributes some of the strongest lines of Ochiba, the likes of which will make you weep for the beauty of them.

High hopes, huh. But if I can pull it off, I'll be known for that.
