Yes, I also have a kohaku in the mud. I don't have a photo of it. I saw it at the AKCA seminar and later won the auction for it. I got it for a steal, especially if it turns out to be female. Since it went into the mud late, I expect it will be small for a nissai. But if it turns out to be female and its quality holds up, I'll be willing to leave her with Mat to go in the mud again next summer.

Mat by the way was in Chicago this weekend for thier bigger show......one of his koi took a first against some pretty stiff competition. I know he must be getting anxious for october and to begin the harvest....just to see how all the work this year with his tosai has turned out. There's nothing more exciting for a breeder than to "bring em up" for all to see.

In all fairness to the wonderful crew he has at Nisei, I think for all the first time visitors there this fall you'll see Mat has some great help!

Just got home from the Chicago show (and the fish settled back in the pond) which was the Northern Midwest ZNA show. We also went to MPKS show two weeks before this one. We have spent a lot of time over the course of those two weekends talking to Mat. I hadn't seen any of Mat's fish for at least two years (the last time he was at ZNA in Chicago). I can say that what he brought to these two shows is a different and much improved quality than the last time we had seen them. The fish have lots of potential. We now own a nice little kohaku and sanke from him. The quality is good and he is great to talk with. We were very impressed.

I've tried to post my Kohaku that's growing out. But, I'm getting an upload failure notice without a reason stated. I'll try again later.

Marc, any pics? I've got a sanke and kohaku in Mat's mud and I'll have to get a pic of them posted (maybe Mike or Henry) when they come out....do you have warm indoor facilities to get your babies thru winter?

I agree with Marc. Matt brought seven fish to Chicago. Four were sold before I even walked up to the tank- one to Jim Reilly. One went in to the auction. There were the nicest fish I've seen from the Nisei Koi Farm. Also, Matt is knowledgable enough to "predict" the future of the fish. That's important when you are buying fish at this size.

Here is a photo of a jumbo "hybrid" tosai sanke I bought in Japan in January at Yohei Koi Farm in Toyoto City. It was 13 inches at 8 months of age. Paid Nisai price for what was said to be - dare I say it - tategoi. Keeping my fingers crossed for a sucessful growing season and harvest.

Sorry I can't seem to get a photo to load either. Here is a link. If someone can load the photo I would appreciate the assistance.

Dick,
We will work on photos of the new little ones. And also try to get pics from the show. We borrowed my sister's camera for the show and have to wait on her to download the pics; but will try to have them in the next few days. As far as a warm place for the new little ones, I am kind of torn. We have a greenhouse we put over the pond and the water temps never went below 45 last winter. However, we also had two little ones down in our QT vat for the winter and they grew over 10" from last Sept to this Sept. We didn't put them outside until end of February in the greenhouse. We're not sure and still debating.

Thanks for getting the kohaku pic posted. Lots of potential with that 3 step koi...will be fun to see the harvest picture when the time comes to see the improvement.

Marc,
When you say you kept your little ones downstairs, do they get adequate
natural light? It's a difficult choice to choose between temp and exposure to natural light as both are equally important to the welfare of the koi. You'd kinda like to grow them in the winter but not at the expense of being away from natural light.

That rascal JR purchased a koi and didn't post the picture? Wouldn't it be ironic if he raises it and it wins GC somewhere and he has to fork over to Mat
that dollar for the bet those two have on.......LOL!

On another chat line saw a kohaku Mike Snaden bought from maurice at UK koi from Momotaro's "Eagle" bloodline.....tell you what....the word "domestic"
will quickly be taking on new meaning
