| stories from fall in Niigata-let's share
The last time I was in Niigata, I was looking for a showa. I figured a two year old was something I could afford and i wanted to get one that the breeder thought enough of to ok the use of his mudspond the next year. The first 3 days of the trip I looked but could not find a 2 year old showa that appealed to me. Finally the 4th day, We rolled up to igarashi Kazuto's place and we all rolled out of the van. I stood over a small tank of 2 year olds packed with koi. You'd see something you'd be intrested in and it would fanish the next second. As I waited to get the breeders attention (others were looking at much older more expensive koi ) I saw what I was looking for...nice panda beni eyes...beautiful. Now if I could ever find it again. As I awaited my turn another visitor in our group spotted the same fish as he walked by and ran off to get the net and owner. I tried to explain that I had been waiting hours for that fish but none to his concern. Before my eyes it was bowled and sold. Was i ever dejected. So when everyone else had bought what they came for I was asked if I wanted to look at any fish. Explaining my chagrin to our host (he wasn't about to be denied his commission) He asked the breeder to select a 2 year old showa for me. The first 2 came up and were about the same quality as some I had at home. So I passed and indicated I wanted something better. One fish came up the next time and it was a little nicer but obviously male. So I raised the price again and then the breeder came up with a really nice kindai tategoi. Was it female? "yes"....was it good enough to go out in the mud ponds next year..". yes ".....(did I end up spending twice my limit...YES!) Later that evening at supper I explained in great detail my discust for the party that took my koi...to which the host leaned over the table and whispered "Dick, He paid twice as much for that koi as you did yours".....realizing that I could never have justified the price to my wife and would have embarrassed myself in passing...I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the rest of the evening. Moral of the story: Take twice as much $$$$$$ as you think you can spend!!!!!! |
