Now whose grinning. I guess sometimes, even with these glasses on, I get it right. Several others seem to "see" it that way too. (This makes up for ALL the ones I miss.)

Hey Tony,

The Sanke was B and the Showas were A and C. Could you post the results again so that we know what you mean for sure.

Hey Mark,
Don't get too excited yet. If you read Antonio's results he does say that the Sanke was 1st place. Let see what the results are when Tony clarifies.

Actually . . .

unless the three koi were judged in the same class, on the same day of the same show by the same judges, those "results" are meaningless.

Was that the case here? Inquiring minds want to know.

Here is the skinny...At show the Sanke did better than the Showas. In fact the Sanke won best in it's size. What is funny is that alot of people picked the Old style showa for show. These fish were judged under the Shinkokai level judging so the Sanke being around 75% finished did a bit better. If we look at the Old Showa it is 100% finish or at prime condition...

So, it looks like they were judged on the same day, same class, same show, I guess that means it counts!!!

Again, I am not a judge, but just learning as much as I can about the subtleties of the game. One thing that I hear often is that one can not judge a koi from a photo. Did you see the fish in person Tony? Was the depth of the hi on the Sanke vastly superior? What about the shiro and the sumi? Judging is more than pattern.

At a recent show one particular fish looked to me to place higher than a competitor two tanks away. I was fortunate enough to be close enough to hear the judges discuss the two fish. Neither fish was mine but I was interested in the reasons as to why one was selected over the other since the pattern of one Kohaku looked better to me. Then one judge pointed out that the gill plates on the one fish were deformed. I never would have never noticed and you sure couldn't see it from a top down photo.

Honestly Rick have not seen this fish in person. I can only go by the way these fish placed at the Japanese level of show.

Judges, judge the overall quality of the fish that day. Plus, the Japanese like to see more future than finished in the fish they judge.
