Again, I am not a judge, but just learning as much as I can about the subtleties of the game. One thing that I hear often is that one can not judge a koi from a photo. Did you see the fish in person Tony? Was the depth of the hi on the Sanke vastly superior? What about the shiro and the sumi? Judging is more than pattern.
At a recent show one particular fish looked to me to place higher than a competitor two tanks away. I was fortunate enough to be close enough to hear the judges discuss the two fish. Neither fish was mine but I was interested in the reasons as to why one was selected over the other since the pattern of one Kohaku looked better to me. Then one judge pointed out that the gill plates on the one fish were deformed. I never would have never noticed and you sure couldn't see it from a top down photo.
