This story is a 3 year old story now but I'll tell it anyway. I had a nisai Kohaku that I paid Marudo to grow out one season. When I brought the fish back in November 03, I had something pressing on my mind concerning a good friend's high school son. Mitchell had a brain tumor and there was not much hope. The church had a big fundraiser and I purchased a number of silent auction items but did not donate anything. I decided to donate the fish.

Mark Bodycott set up the auction on his web site. The tax deductible donation for the fish reached $1300 before a woman in Texas bid $4000. Also, Bob Winkler started a cartel collection in an attempt to outbid the Texas bidder AND allow me to keep my fish. The bidding ended; the Texas bid was the highest and Bob collected another $2600 that was donated anyway. So, in total $6600 went to Mitchell's family. When Mark Body asked the woman from Texas where he should ship her fish, she said, "ship the fish to Mike" Who was the woman from Texas- Savannah Robinson. Now that's charity and it involves the koi society in total. I'll never forget it.

That is a really touching story. I am glad to hear that there are people willing to do things for others like that.

That's a great story about some truly fine folks, but not really about what a club can do. Our club puts up displays at local flower and garden shows, including a small FG pond with koi and plants. We support a pond at a local museum with design and maintenance help and of course koi. We continue to support the AKCA KHV project. We hold an annual pond tour to showcase a variety of pond styles and attract new koi kichi. In turn, several local koi breeders and retailers support us. In the end all the money goes back into the hobby, not just for our members but for the whole communty.

Some members have also gone into the KHA program, and help anyone with a pond problem (not just club members). They recruit new Veterinarians, and spread the word on good koi keeping practice. They even talk pond owners into taking the rocks out!

I'm NOT a fan of the 'person in Texas' but have to admit -she was an excellent human being that day.

How did your friend's child do? JR

JR- I don't think she needs any fans I am pretty sure she has central A/C.

For those who feel to do so, here is great need that my wife and I give support to. www.treeoflifeforhaiti.org

The thing I like about them is they are not teaching the kids there to look for handouts or US gov help, but to build and sustain profitable business ventures together via education, so they have a future as a nation.

A few things come to my mind :

- blood drive, pick a clud meeting date, create a sign up list, and coordinate that with your local Red Cross, of Stanford Blood bank if you are in NorCal.
- koi auction to raise fund for charity, say Second Harvest. Best time to do that is before thanks giving/Xmas, when Charities need all the fund they can gather, and koi purists coming back from Japan with new catches. The club can either buy koi for the auction, or ask local dealers to donate koi to the auction. You will need to connect properly with the targeted charity that winner of acution pay directly to the charity, to get the tax benifit.

don't do food drive, too much work and you will need a place to store them. Money is always better.
