Cool I Just Came Back From Seeing Maruyama!

Well, now that I have your attention, I did go to see two of the Maruyama Jumbo Tosai that we sold during our event in April. We are going to have a judging next year and since these two Koi are only 20 minutes away, I thought I would visit. I also wanted to see this gentlemans pond as I have heard a lot about it and new it was very nice. The Maruyama's were doing very well they started out betweenn 8"-9" and they are now 13"-14". I am sorry I do not have any pictures. The pond is 4000 gallons and has about 24 Koi ranging in size from 10"-28". They all are healthy and doing well. To my surprise I found out that this pond is a gunnite pond that was sealed with Sani-Tred. It was sealed 14 months ago and it looks great. It has a nice thin coat of algae growing on it, but more importantly there are no bubbles in the product and it is not pealing off. It looks great! I was excited because the four new 3000 gallon tanks I put in at my store are sealed with Sani-Tred and I was concerned about longevity. You hear so many different things that it is hard to know what to beleive. My ponds are above ground so if I do ever have any leaking it will be obvious. This I felt is a great way to test a product because there can be no denying a problem like a leak if you can see all four sides of a pond.
I was very pleased to see the Maruyama's and pleasantly surprised by getting to see an older Sani-Tred application.

Hi Antonio, his name is Bob Adler. He is really into the hobby, but he got a rocky start with his pond builder and the Koi he bought, but he is persevering. He has a really beautiful pond.

sometimes, I have an urge to be an interpreter to some of our newer readers
so with apologies to our regulars...

Isawa-prononced Ee-sow-waa

A hot springs area known for it's fruit by the japanese people and the home
(among others) of Toshio Sakai-my koi breeder hero- and famous matsunosuke bloodline breeder who pioneered bringing Magoi bloodline (basic carp ) back into koi bloodline to positively affect body shape and growth potential.

Maruyama is not too far from Sakai. It is a great place to visit, Isawa. I have been obsessing since January about going back.

Tony,

Thank you for your kind words. If you are ever up this way...just let me know and maybe we can arrange for you to stop by and see the pond "upfront and personal".

I am also happy to see that Russ's concerns re: Sanitred were somewhat alleviated after seeing just how well it has done for me since I applied it last
August of 2005. Sanitred is the DIY's dream. Relatively inexpensive, and very easy to apply, no bubbling, and..........oh yes, no water loss/leaks !!

My pond is also the "perfect" example of all the "new hobbyist" mistakes that can occur. NOT regarding the pond itself, but rather the Koi that swim in it.
Buying too many, too fast, and w/o a sufficient knowledge base to recognize the quality of what I was purchasing.
Now, over time, I will reduce my present population and "gradually" increase the quality of my stock by purchasing with a more educated eye. That is why I purchased the Maruyama Kohaku from Russ Peters this past April.

Bob A.
