4 showa siblings . . .

from the Sakai FF auction. Gee, I'd like to see this group in a couple of years to learn what happens.

EDIT: Whoops, will try and figure out how to 'enlarge' the pix.

There is no other better way than to purchase them, that would be an adventure in itself, Just watching them for a couple of years.

Notice how thick the tail is on each of these. Wonderful koi.

Hello Mike . . .

I was hoping you'd show up with your love for and knowledge of showa.

Yes, they're quite amazing to me -- and the math blows me away, too. 500,000 or so eggs from his oyagoi Blue Mountain and only a handful of siblings made it to the auction. Wow.

Their bodies look good and like you've said, wonderfully thick ozutsu. But I've reservations about their head structure... they seem pointy and triangular which usually tells me koi like these don't get very big.

keep in mind when a koi is sold at auction, it means that the koi is ready now
to leave the breeders facility and have the new owner finish it up. It doesn't mean there were only 4 of 500,000 that made it. Many have already been sold and are being raised in a mudpond there under the breeders careful scrutiny and still others have been hidden away (stealth like) so that they are unseen, to be made available when the time ( and money ) is right.

Judging from what the koi looked like in the photo the cage black should be up and ready to go to the show within a year's time. Getting them into the hands of new owners at the proper time for them to finish them up and get them into their show is a vital part of farming. Same as any farm crop being harvested and sold at the peak of their flavor/ripeness.

I was not able to detect anything wrong with body or head shapes and thought anyone of these koi would be worthy of the finest ponds

Talking If Only $$$

While all have nice strong bodies and look ready to be finished, the one I would really like to SEE finished is #102 . If the facial Sumi develops the way it seems to be headed the overall Sumi pattern should really be an eye catcher on a well balanced red/white field. It also looks to have a slightly smoother body overall, but pictures can be deceptive, creating minor irregularities where none exist.
If I were going to rank their prospects I would go 102, 100, 101, 103.
