My poor girl got no pictures taken!! LOls

Here's a shot of the showa I entered in the show. I hope she will continue to improve and do better at next year's show!
great seeing everyone- and thanks to Ray Able for all his help so that I could be part of this years MAKC show.

I see the problem JR...

Hmmm.... let me see if I can diagnose the problem with this fish... I think it needs a bit of less than ABSOLUTELY gin clear water... I'm thinkin' something along the lines of plants and some algae... and the NJ climes might be a bit harsh on her... I GOT IT!!! Send her to me and I will take good care of her...HONEST!! WOW... nice fish...

I have a weakness for showa and none are safe around me.. I was not at Allentown this year because of an "unfortunate" incident last year where the security guard stopped me walking out of the show and asked "Is that a showa in your pocket or are your Depends leaking??" To which my wife added "again.."..

Someday I will have a doitsu showa.. someday..

Thanks REC. I hope she can catch the judge's eyes next year when that sumi comes up more. She's only two so she has some time yet. Best of all. this fish is a WAGOI! scaled! The color is so vivid that she appears to be doitsu. But if you look close, she has the creamy white skin of a scaled fish and the beni is as kohaku like as your going to see on a showa.

How was the lighting for the show? It was indoors right?

Unfortunately the light was not so great. Indoors with single tube flourscents throwing off a weak white/pink light. JR

For our learning experience what percentage is your Showa finished?

For the Camellia Show they had a person carry around a light so the judges can get a better look at the fish.

Yea, there is nothing like outdoor light. In natural light high class koi get better and lower class koi show all the flaws in skin type and color depth.

Tony, this is a tricky fish. I know it looks very finished from the photo as you would want in an under 60 cm show fish. But actually the fish is just of an intense color and is not finished at all. Probably only 60-70% finished. Check out the nature of beni - look at the blend of this years and next year's beni. The sumi is very intense and vert dense but not completely filled in yet. The sumi is of a very high grade and extents from the deep dernis to the thin epidermis on top of the scales. The draw back on this fish is that although it is large for a two year old it will not likely grow past 26-28 inches. ( Dainichi X new Matsunosuke cross).
Usually when you see a fish of this intense coloring, but of only ONE color layer or depth, it is typically 90% finished. I post pictures of this fish as it changes with age- stay tuned. JR

A wonderful Showa, JR. I'll hope the sumi does not expand much more on the nose, but even if it does, she is a treasure.

JR, do you have a better pic showing the lines on the Showa?
