Updated photos of baby mail-order koi that I received during heatwave in New Jersey

Was trying to get some pictures of these guys before the cold set in here in New Jersey.

These were purchased in the mail to restart-restock my pond from scatch after losing all my 6 year old koi due to not following a quarantine procedure with some new arrivals.

They seem to be really healthy and thats the most important thing, I know there not the show quality or anything but I don't care just as long as they are HEALTHY.

They have been packing on some nice size. When I first received them they were so small I was really kinda shocked.

But lots of feedings and lots of frequent water changes seem to be paying off.

They were on Dainichi Growth Plus for the whole summer, and then switched to the All Season formula.

I always used Hikari foods, but I really think I am getting faster growth rates with the Dainichi food.

Thanks for looking..

Now I just have to hope they make it through the winter.

Looks like you have got some good growth out of them . It's a shame the color is fading on some of them.

Good growth, but losing color on alot of them... Could be water conditions or just low quality koi. But these koi will be a great learning experiance on your koi husbandry skills. If you can grow these out with no damages perhaps you can invest in a higher quality later on. I think you are going in the right direction, there are many things you can learn from these koi.. Keep up the good work and enjoy yourself.

They look like a nice bunch. Your up north like me, can anyone tell me at what temp does the bio balls, and bacteria stop working in filters.

Most won't stop working unless it freezes. Bacteria slow way down in the cold, but can still be active.

John Kenny-

Russell said bacteria slow down. That means that the filtration declines and cannot do the work it was able to do at higher temps. There are many bacteria with different roles within the complex, mature system and this would even include bacteria adapted to the lower temps of the north.

Common advice is that food quantity should be tapered off starting at 65F, and that food type be switched over to wheatgerm based foods starting then also. At 50F feeding stops. Do not try to fatten them up now with heavy feedings.

Damon-

It's nice to see that you've gotten your pond going again. Your open reception of the comments made here is a testement to your desire to do well. After creating QT facility maybe you can do a little upgrading in the future like Nancy said. Dick has suggested a very cool place to do a little shopping.

Yeah... those fish look really nice and healthy... to be honest, I think they look really good the way they are, but if the color were more briliant it would be amazing!
