I do think the way a dealer buys is indicative of his market. Initially we as hobbyists all get enthralled with gosanke, but then the appeal and knowledge of a really good something else takes over...maybe why i like asagi so much.

As I look back now over the last decade in the NW the koi people still talk about were not so much the GC's of the various shows but of something extraordinary...for example the bush's from oregon brought in a kosui (cross between a kohaku and shusui )a few years back that people still rave about. Joyce Tsugi had a douitsu showa that stole the show one year...I'm sure you can mention several from your
area.....I still appreciate my ake mae kigoi for her banana yellow skin and red eyes.

Thank you for the feedback. I was kind of worried as I reread my post I realized I may have sounded a little harsh.
But I find it interesting that most hobbyists are advanced through the hobby by focusing on go-sanke. But often times it is a special fish that really catches the my at shows and not the GC. For instance Carolyn Swanson's doitsu goshiki at the San Diego show was just unreal because of the combination of quality and uniqueness. And yet is you go back to it the GC's (generally gosanke) are the superior fish, based on refinement. Sometimes it is just a little hard two balance these issues out in my head maybe. That being said I can't wait to see those beni kikokouryu (sp) once they get back to So.Cal. Even though I understand and believe that a good wagoi kohaku is a better fish.

Dang Shawn is so lucky he has been over in Japan for about a month... We ran into him and Bill while we were there. Had a chance to visit for a few minutes, then we were off to another breeder. I must say Shawn is looking mighty cool these days, I am not sure I would have recognized him if he was not with his (young dad) inside joke for Bill.

I sure hope Shawn gets home soon and they post the rest of the pics of this years buying trip, for all of us to see.
