To me this discussion is about the differences in tategoi and tateshita. Learning about the beni quality of kohaku unlocks many doors to understanding quality. As was stated earlier, in Japan, most of the breeders HIGH QUALITY koi have the lustrous deep persimmon based beni. It's just looking at fish of different ages can show you much about the development of the beni. For example, a two year old (nisai) will not have the same level of developed beni as say a four (Yonsai) or five (gosai) year old fish. I just came back from the trip with Russ and Erwin. We saw many, many kohaku from nisai to Gosai. Looking at different breeders fish over 70cm, it's very interesting to note the differences in quality from one keito to the other. The prices reflect this difference and if you don't understand the quality you're looking at for the price, you can definitely get ripped off. But then again, are you getting ripped off or are you willing to pay the higher price for the better fish. It's all about seeing the differences for yourself - then you will understand.
