My first impression was that it was very nice. Shiroji is excellent, sumi is good quality - and then I took a closer look - I think the beni on the head will break up. If you too look closely, you'll see lighter areas within the head pattern that indicate this fish was fed color food to brighten it up for the fall sale season. IMHO, I feel this is an average to medium grade fish and should sell for about $200. But I wouldn't buy it due to the concerns about the head pattern.

An ebay auction is one way to determine worth. It is working well for Fishmaker. Kevan, would you like to flesh out your profile a bit for us? You in California? What's your bid?

Kevan-

I thought you were an Englishman. Fishmaker is now reading and posting to this board. He is Richard Rumbold. We enjoy his posts and his fish. Of course we greatly enjoy Maurice Cox and his fish and his great contributions to the filtration practices many of us use. You have the advantage of us in the states there, eh? Oh crap. I think I just remembered. You are a breeder also, right?

Mr. Benbow-

Thank you for your concern. You must realize that a ten hour drive at night in iffy weather is a challenge to the formerly young and tough.

Mickey,

what is the point you are trying to make
why not just state how much you think the koi is worth rather than trying to be a smartarse.

for what its worth i think the koi posted are fantastic, and the post has the blessing of the owner...and before you ask yes i am a breeder but as i have stated before i dont currently sell fish, and these are not mine...but thanks for ruining a good post with your suspicious nonsense.

Would it matter if a breeder asked "how much do you think my koi are worth?", if anything, having a say is a blessing.

But I would think a breeder would already know how much they were worth, since they bred them.

These kinds of posts make me uncomfortable. First, you cannot accurately determine much more than body shape and pattern from a photo. Second, you can't know the motives of the person posting the photo and question.

I once had someone send me a email and photo of a kohaku they said they were thinking about buying and asked for my advice. I deferred and asked if they had seen it in person? They had not seen in person. They pestered me for asistance as they were thinking of buyig and wanted a 2nd opinion. I give them my honest but limited to a single photo opionion of it's quality(medium) and estimated value. They responded back that I was a idiot . It was a winner of many awards in Japan and they had already bought the koi and paid many times more than I (incorrectly) thought it was worth. Of course they thought it was fine to have lied to me about already owning the koi.

I guess no good deed goes unpunished. THis is why I rarely if ever offer a opinion about the value of a koi in person or especially over the internet.

i agree that judging koi from photos is certainly not the best method, especially if the pictures are poor,

however i think if the picture is good and if we know the size and sex then we can have fun trying to guess...in fact in the last guessing game the board on the whole came pretty close i believe, so i feel there is at least some merit and some fun to be had. there is no finger pointing here just comments and fun.
