| Interesting tidbits from Nissei Harvest (Ochiba Monday) After some days home again, I now have enough time to post some pics of the little gems that turned up on the Monday after the Big Event at Nissei Koi Farm of Quality Koi. MikeM is doing a great job as usual of posting a chronicle of events for our enjoyment and I thought these few pics would be best elsewhere, not popped into the middle of the harvest's thread. After a lot of fun stuff, (Is it true folks from the Pacific Northwest have more fun than the Californians?) Mat and Ross finally went out to pull some ochiba fry. The parent cross was female ochiba to two male kohakus, one of them GR. What do you think they got? Well, at first I was surprised because there was no evidence of any Iowa or Arkansas genetics in the whole bowl of about 500 fish. I saw one black dorsal on an orange fish and one tobi shiro muji, that's it. These fish had been culled well. Ochibas came in three different color shades, light, medium and dark. There were also soragoi and chagoi, each of them in many shades. And kohaku, he types with a straight face, not betraying his excitement. Nice ones. Mat was a little possesive about the kohaks. I looked for a red and blue fish but couldn't see it, maybe later. Now I regret not choosing any of the dark ochibas to watch. Some pics for you. It will be obvious that I am not a photographer. And now I wish for a pic of the whole tank full, the button nose GR ochiba, and whole groups of fish side by side. #1 a net full, pond side. #2 one little kohaku #3 a couple of light ochibas #4 two medium ochibas and two chagois that look yellow in the flash. #5 some New Jersey that was smuggled home in the bag. #6 some of the blue that Mr. Benbow pulled out for consideration. | Mick: Don't stop there! ... Out of the hundred(s)of thousands of eggs, the batch was culled down to about 500. So, what's your estimate of how many of the Ochiba tosai had nicely balanced Kohaku-type patterns? |

| Mike- I'm stopping there cuz there ain't no more. Heck I didn't even get my camera out Saturday or Sunday. The guys thought that they caught more than half with their time saving power pull through the pond. I don't know if they were planning to drain the pond Tuesday or not, but it was full when they flew through to get these for us. I believe I heard they had another whole pond form this spawn also. The ochibas were confusing. Many were the light ones that are valued for their yellowish cha. Their patterns were the easiest to see. The mediums showed as blue and brown fish and the blue is beautiful. Will they darken and be less attractive? ?? ??? The dark fish that I regret not choosing showed only a small variation of color between the dark blue and the brownish blue patterning. I heard Dick remark right away that the patterns were mostly following the pattern of the mother by being heavy headed and you can see this in most of mine. For the numbers question my answer would have to be "few" What pattern and color will evolve from what I saw? Dunno, but very exciting. Mickey the windowman |

| Micky, Great to meet you last weekend, you fit right in with our NW "Blues Signing" group. We really enjoyed the weekend, not just the "Koi" but all people involved, both breeder and Koi Hobby types. I didn't get a clear shot of Chris's Ochiba, just a head shot along with some of the others. Tradition started with "Ochiba Monday" along with our grow out contest for next fall. You just can't do better than a weekend with Mat and crew! |

| I think those that have never experienced a pond pull can marvel over picture #1. Pretty hard to see one ochiba in there yet, this is where all the good stuff came from. Talk about diversity! I think the favorite part of what mat and ross do, for me anyway; is getting into the net and sorting...I love that part! Can do it all day long, must admitt the back gets to me tho ![]() |
