| Yamamatsu Information- Info Yamamatsu The Niigata home of Matsunosuke - Toshio & Toshiyuki Sakai Of all the famous Nishikigoi breeders in Niigata in general and Mushigame in particular, there is perhaps one name above all others that rings a universal chord of recognition -Matsunosuke. The Matsunosuke Sanke bloodline was developed by brothers Toshio and Toshiyuki Sakai and in the last twenty years or so has assumed recognition as one of the most important bloodlines in Koi. In addition to being widely acknowledged as quite simply some of the finest individual Koi ever produced, the Matsunosuke bloodline has also been included in the development of other notable breeders: Shintaro, Torazo, Igarashi Kazuto, Yagenji, and many others. Toshio and Toshiyuki Sakai work to constantly develop the quality of Matsunosuke Koi both at Toshio's extensive facility in Isawa -The Isawa Nishikigoi Centre and the famous Yamamastu shop in Mushigame. Although Matsunosuke Koi have many attributes of excellence two main ones that not only render individual Koi potential world class but even more important make their potential as broodstock almost priceless. The famous ‘Matsunosuke Shine’ is the first of these two elements. Toshio Sakai considers beni, (hi or red skin) to be the most important aspect in skin. In his relentless pursuit of ever improving skin Toshio however does not just focus on the colour, but other key elements also. Specifically the elasticity and depth of the beni is fundamental in Matsunosuke Koi. Added to this is the gradual development of the unique fukurin skin, not to be confused with gin rin, that imparts an extra almost sublime element to the Koi and makes them absolutely sparkle!! The second element was the introduction of Magoi blood into the Matsunosuke linage. This was designed to increase the maximum growth potential and as the bloodline has been refined the benefits of this master stroke is becoming increasingly noticeable. Remember the 93cm Matsunosuke Sanke at the 2001 All Japan? - well just wait for the 2002 show! Toshiyuki Sakai is the elder of the two brothers and so inherited the family business on the death of his father. Toshio went to Isawa and created the Isawa Nishikigoi centre and while Yamamatsu - the Niigata family business is owned and run by Toshiyuki. The brothers work closely and together, have forged one of the most significant and important collaborations in Nishikigoi. Yamamatsu has undergone tremendous change over the last few years. In 1999 the old family house and facility was demolished and replaced by an extensive new fish house. While the traditional Koi house has disappeared, the essence of Yamamatsu endures and apart from being much bigger, the modern facility is much more customer friendly and it also enables many more Koi to be housed and grown during winter and of course it also makes a very impressive showroom for the Matsunosuke brand of Koi. Yamamatsu has for many years dominated the epicentre of Yamakoshi -Mushigame village, and although the Koi industry has grown beyond anyone's wildest expectations, with new breeders joining the business and existing ones also growing and developing, the fact remains that in 2001 Yamamatsu still dominate Mushigame. Incidentally, we asked Waddy some years ago where the name Yamamatsu originated. It seems that the famous name was derived from a combination of YAMAkoshi and MATSUnosuke. One of the elements that have kept Matsunosuke in their position of preeminence IS the constant striving of the Sakai brothers to improve. Indeed Toshio has a nickname The Challenger. In addition to the key innovations designed to generate improvements in Matsunosuke bloodline Koi mentioned earlier, this is the introduction of solar powered auto feeders on some of their mud ponds. In addition to reducing workloads the auto feeders enable more regular feeds to be given, This 'experiment' has the potential to deliver another major benefit - time will tell but the fact that leading breeders including; Torazo, Kazuto and others, are also deploying auto feeders – speaks absolute volumes! In common with many of the famous Koi families the Sakai name is being carried on through the son's of many leading breeders. There has been a noticeable shift in attitudes in the Koi business of Niigata as the influence of the new generation Japanese positively affects many of the aspects of these traditional businesses. Toshiyaki Sakai is Toshiyuki’s eldest son, he has taken on an increasingly important role in Yamamatsu, and with two of the best teachers in the Koi world it’s hardly surprising that he is rapidly developing into a Koi master in his own right. While Toshiyuki and in the driving seat – and long may this continue, the existence of this natural line of succession through Toshiyaki, reassuringly secures the future of one of proudest and most important companies and bloodlines in Nishikigoi.
