Russ, Joe....points well taken. Filter if designed properly is just fine but needs to be matured. I run a bakki shower with BH in my inside pond and like it. But I also run J-Mat as well. I';m always playing with any new media that comes out for the knowledge. I think for ease of moving aged filter media into a new
facility you can't beat k-1.....

looking at the pic again looks like a large peice of plexi is on top of the pond as a cover.. I dunno but seem like if the koi hits that in a jump then it could easily be knocked out. Like in my earlier post. Koi love to jump. This is new waters especially straight from Japan and being in a small space..

disinfection

In what circumstances would the system have to be disinfected? The first thing that comes to mind would be KHV, but would there be others? My memory is more than a little faulty, but I remember somebody saying that costia can live in all those pesky snails, taking a complete nuking to get rid of everything. I would think that Bakki media would be difficult to completely disinfect with all those little holes, J-mat or gravel being easier to do a complete job. Or...would a hospital tank set-up be a wiser choice for obvious infestations.
