Matsunosuke Sanke Appreciation.

Here is one of the koi I won from majestic koi for 45 dollars at auction at the camellia koi club (Best Day in my life).
I won this koi from majestic koi; I think the person who personally gave it to me was aquitori aka Water bird, or was it deechong. But I am not sure, and want to get that misunderstanding straightened out. By the way I had a blast meeting you, but was nervous to meet a real koi-bito-er. I hope you are going to the ZNA meeting, I would love to hear more about that 7 foot koi pond you have.

Well back to the Matsunosuke sanke I have.
I got the sanke due to the name of the bloodline it was. At first I though it was momotaro, but I was told it was Matsunosuke.
The sanke has little Sumi on its body, and I am hoping more develops on this koi.
Forgive me for the horrible picture, the off white on the head is actually a scar on the koi.

lil: The long lean look of your sanke is a trait of matsunosuke. You'll need to wait a couple of years to see it "bloom". You'll need a lot of space! The scar may be the reason this koi was within your means.

You must have 2 different Aquitori's mistaken...I didnt meet you at the Show, I think I may have seen you...you were the 6'3" guy infront of Toshio Sakai by the stage...right? I was too busy looking at goldfish. I wont be at the meeting...have family to tend to...7 foot pond? I buried my pond several years ago...

Back to the appreciation...Sorry but I cant appreciate this Sanke, honestly if I were next to when you were bidding on this fish I would have told you not to bid. There are far more better examples for you to play around with at $35.

Unfortunately I agree. It is difficult to find nice things to say about this fish. There is always going to be a BIG gamble with sanke of this size but at the very least you can ensure that you have a good Kohaku pattern to start from. This fish doesnt have that I'm afraid so no amount of luck with the mirriad of other variables is ever going to make this a good fish.

Also, imho, the scar on this fish is enough to render it unsaleble to be honest.

Just to clear up, you say you 'won' the fish but later on in the post you say you have paid $45 for it???

If it was free, or even for $45 I guess, its not a disaster but its never going to be a show winner. Decent enough for a learning experience though.

I won the fish, as in auction, for $45.
You know, I asked sakai san if it was a good fish, and he said...."yes"....Haha, He either has a fortune telling gift for koi, or he was being very nice. Wow, ERIC, making a FOOL of Himself 1 day at a time, good times.. good times....

Well, atleast I can see it develop, it will be a fun one to watch too!. I will be able to see how matsunosuke sanke develop atleast to size, and somewhat to color.
All of my big koi will go into my 21 x 14 x 3.5-4 6000 gallon pond when it is done, hopefully that will be enough space.
atleast it will be a fine, big pond quality koi.

6'4" pretty tall for being 17years old...Well anyways, it is hard to say much about this koi, because it is general pond grade. But if you offer a better pic to convince us other wise then it would be more helpful to access the Sanke.

yes, sorry for that. I will be sure to get another picture as soon as I can, probably this weekend.
I am really looking forward to this meeting, and I wish you could come. I would like to have a long chat with you.

It would best to supply a better pic, so we can give a fair opinion of the fish. I can not attend the first part of buying trip meeting at PSKoi. There will be many other people from the club to answer any of your questions, like Mike Perret, Erwin and Dinh...Maybe Mike and Erwin can talk to you about their trip to Japan and Erwin can show you the hundreds of pics he took at the breeders.

As a new koikeeper learning the basics of koi care and appreciation, I think you are wise not to acquire any fish that costs more than $50. At that price you will not get any prize winners. But, you can get tosai that have the genes to be something more than a pond mutt from PetSmart. In a year or two you will learn quite a bit and be ready to move up. But, in the meantime, you will lose fish. It happens. Learn on these lesser cost fish and save your money. When you go a year without a loss, then move up to a $500 limit. ...These "inexpensive koi" (maybe not so cheap for a 17 year old's budget?) should not be viewed as junk fish. They are simply less accomplished. Your Matsunosuke Sanke went through at least three cullings. There were hundreds of thousands of baby koi that were surpassed by it. The chances are that in 1989 (when you were born?) there were not many koi in the world with the refinement of genes that you little Sanke possesses. Treasure it, and you will still remember it when you're getting old and gray ...like me.
