Your lil Matsunosuke sanke would be a perfect example of what i would use in my clsses on how to pick tosai. Black is always strongest in the tail section.
So many times folks pick nicely stepped black from the tail up and wish for the last shoulder patch to come in ( not impossible but good luck! ) better to pick a sanke with the black up on the shoulder, that way your % goes up that it will fill in at the tail!

I Always appreciate your enthusiasm for learning....remember this lesson!

So the fish is kind of not good to some point? It should have sumi at the tail region instead of where it has it now?

Ahhh, I understand, at first I though it was saying something bad. but I do understand. so what you are saying is buy a sanke with the sumi at the 1/3 part of the fish, at the shoulder or around there. and then the sumi will develop down much quicker since the sumi is more prone to pop up there?

I will remember it.

Go right on ahead and use my fish for teaching, you may copy the pics, I am sure you would have anyways.

I am just starting also, but that Sanke does not seem any better than the ones I bought at petco, a few years ago. ( I got rid of all of them) I am not trying to be mean, but I dont understand, how some have said these are features we look for in selecting Sanke. Is this really a good example of a nice Sanke? I think I better go buy another book, if this is the case.

koisrus . . .

Dick was being polite and his lesson re: shoulder sumi points out that something can be learned from almost any koi.

This particular koi was rated several days ago (and you're not too far off the mark set by Aquitori and D@Z). Don

I think its not done developing, but at this time, the koi is not as good as one could be, its matsunosuke thought, it will grow big too.
And it wont stop me from anticipating what this koi will change into, I am learning how matsunosuke sanke and showa behave.

I think from a learner's standpoint those pictures posted here on KB that show the year to year progression of sorts helps you to understand development. I cringe when i see customers in dealerships stareing at finished fish on koi calendar's and then heading off to the bins to find one exactly like that.If a tosai is already at it's peak, there's only one other place it can go and it's not up.....

many times the way it works is like the ugly duck to beautiful swan story Each year the koi gets better and better...but there are rules to follow to help see the swan in the ugly duck...one lesson is that black is always stronger in the tail section.

lesson #2 is that red is always stronger in the head section so when selecting Tosai one looks for uniformity and the same color density at the base of the tail and behind the head and everything in between. Koi that look like 2 spray jobs at the shoulder and only one at the base of the tail are not something you want to "invest" in.....

Unfortunately & Fortunately Not, I am battling a parasite that has gotten a hold of some of my koi, it would be very foolish to purchase a koi in this time.
I still had a great learing experience though!
