With all respect, I wouldn't. I hope this isn't a new addition to your pond or that somone went to the trouble to fly it in over seas. Is that too harsh? This koi's best feature, it's beautiful shiroji, is completely lost in a sea of beni.

Pattern is what stands out. As Richard said, too much red. A couple of breaks on the right would help a lot. But, in a peculiar way, I think I'd personally like it better if the breaks into the beni did not exist. I think it would make a strong, bold impression if it was just the maruten and a solid hi plate. If it had that pattern, the beni would have to be really good to hold up at 28"+. JR has posted on the refinement of koi patterns on NI. This would definitely fall among the less refined. ....Wish I could tell beni quality and depth from a photo.

Since it is just the pattern that we can judge best from a photo, the 3/3 part of this koi ( tail section ) leaves a lot to be desired and probably wouldn't cut it in a show. Kohaku is probably one of the most difficult classes to compete in, and all the koi quality, skin, pattern, body... better be right on!!!!!

For those learning It's also good to talk about the positive of the koi as well, not just focus on the negative. I think a maruten head spot is attractive. In the shoulder area I like white and atleast it has a wedge of it there to give the eye something to explore.

if the koi is not destined for the shows and gives the owner joy to see it everyday ( and the price is right) Then that's the other side of the coin......

My intention to post this koi up for studying about kohaku with heavy hi pattern....Dick's view is always connected to the "teaching" and appreciate that much.... So, keeps share your views on this kohaku....

I think we all can agree that "Big Fish Pattern" on a small fish doesnt look well, but if you can wait on the fish to grow 26"-28" then we can all take back what we said. I have seen the fish in person and the quality is good, looking past the pattern I think it is a good quality Kohak.

I have a soft spot for a maruten gosanke, Just like them for some reason. I agree with aquatori...big fish pattern. May have presence as it grows. So, time will tell if the gamble pays off. Don't consider showing it at a small size...wont do well.

I should step back and say that I'm being very critical of this fish and I realize all fish have merit. However, there is a difference between a big fish pattern and just a big pattern. This fish falls into the later group. I don't like to hedge my opinions because I appreciate the chance to have someone show me the error of my ways. But really, this is an interesting pond grade fish which should improve marginally with age.

I have to say, I agree with Richard on this one also. Beni appears to be very "hard" and mostly finished. Looks male to me. I like a whole lot more white than this fish exhibits. I feel it allows the beni to be showcased as to be floating on a bed of snow.
