Well, certainly a white head is needed on all show winners! But the size can definitely vary. Think about it steve- a huge tancho can weigh down a slim tosai and make it look very 'front heavy'. In addition, the head is rather small and the skin rather thin on a baby.. ( 'brain pan' can even be seen). So 'cute' is a more likely word that will come to your lips than 'powerful'.

If you judge with a Japanese breeder and the beni is not thick on a tancho- no matter what the shape of the circle, that fish is 'outa there'. This is an interesting moment- when you realize that a Japanese breeder judge is all about soundness of stock and not the artistry at the expense of potentially passed on genetic weakness in the form of poor beni. Since so many of these tancho spots are 'helped with scaple and winter work' only the nature of the quality is true and dependable in the end.

JR,

Do you have any pix of Kostie's "Heart Kohaku"?

That is a bit of truth I think entirely too few new to the hobby are even remotely aware of. A bit of careful plastic surgury has raised the pricetag of many tancho's.

The beni looks better in person...I think it's the photo. If it fails...it's for sale...any takers? LOL!!! I realize that tancho..along with any koi..it is conformation first..then things like color quality...and pattern last. I feel that a fish with such a small room for error, such as a tancho, the pattern is much more significant. Other shapes are acceptable..but I think a perfect round tancho mark is always preferred. Assume all things are equal..size, conformation and quality...One has a perfect circle and one has a shield...the circle wins hands down.

Is this technically still a tancho (sanke) despite the oversized hi plate?
