Okay Richard

As in baseball, a pitcher tries to change the sightline of the batter by raising or lowering successive pitches. YOU'RE CHANGING MY SIGHTLINES DAMN IT!! LOL!!!!!!

I still like #1 - that kohaku has some stunning shiroji. But now you throw in a couple of sanke with shiroji that is on a par with it. #4 - Tancho Sanke has some of the best white I've seen on a fish in a while. #5 - the beni is still quite soft and developing as is the sumi. It has a nicely balanced beni pattern and the body looks good for growing out (ozutsu is just the right size). Length ratio looks good as well. So far, for me #1 is still my preference. I have a feeling you're going to have to go some to change my mind - PLEASE HELP PERSUADE ME!!!!!!!! I want more pics - You're doing a really great job with your culling and growing skills. Keep it up!!

Mike

*gurgling* Ayup. But I think I need some alum for this drool reflex.... *LOL*

That update pic of #1 is simply breathtaking! She's still my fav right out of the gate, but the bod on that #3 male is incredibly nice and buff--it screams strength and power, something that 99% of the males out there just don't have. I like his thick beni and gleaming shiroji. I love his clean honest face.

#4 female tancho sanke has that candybox look that just begs to be unwrapped to see the goodies inside--and in this case the goodies are the hints of sumi yet to emerge through the snow-white drift of her shiroji. Her tancho is as thick lacquer slathered generously between softly expressive eyes. No fear of this fading into shiromujiland.

And so these are my favorites out of the first line up, and I can tell you right now Richard, having first choice from this very special harvest is quite an honor AND quite a task.

Marie

I'd like to see #5 in about two weeks. Are these fish going inside? I have little understanding of what a Fresno winter might be like.

Thumbs up This is NOT going to be easy

But it is going to be GOOD . Truth be told if I was going to pick one of these for myself it would be tempting to go for the #3 Male. I've got a Female Kohaku I'd like to introduce him to (hey baby... how you doin' )
But we must keep our priorities straight mustn't we
I'm leaning heavily female because I'm trying to think long term beauty and quality, although the two males both look like they have potential to grow well and hold up nicely as the beni and shiroji on both look outstanding. Not only is the beni richly colored, it looks like it runs deep and the patterns are large enough to maintain a good balance as their bodies grow.
The only concern I have with #1 is the size of the hi plates. Will they keep up with her as she puts on length and girth? The main thing about her that leaps off the screen is the skin quality. She glistens.
I believe you are correct in labeling the Tancho as Tategoi. The shiroji looks great, the tancho spot is nicely shaped and placed and the beni looks very nice. The sumi looks to have the potential to form a very nice pebble pattern if it matures the way it appears to hint at. My only question mark on her is how will she grow? From the photo angle I just can't tell enough about the head/shoulder area (looking for a bulge).
The #5 Sanke is the toughest one for me. The shiroji looks good, the sumi looks good, the pattern is decently balanced and big enough for her to grow into nicely, but the beni screams MEET THE PARENTS! It is in that inbetween place that has me guessing as to whether it is coming or going
For the moment I'm torn between #1 and #4... (my crystal ball is kinda scratchy and needs a good polishing )

Picking very small nits

On #l there seems to be a spot on the tail of very thin hi--it is going somewhere? On #4 (in many ways my fav--I don't like the head marking) there is either a shimi or I haven't been diligent in my screen cleaning.

As a beginner I love #1. I think it's a super looking fish. But I am the 1st to admit I don't really know what to look for, so to help learn I have a question. I'm not trying to pick the fish apart but want to learn. When Kohaku #1 matures, say in 4 or 5 years, do you think the white will be to much for the red? Or should I say will the red spots end up being maybe to small for the amount of white?

Ok, some more of you true KoiKichi turned quiet lurkers out there need to speak up. We have an important task at hand for our resident poet laureate, Marie ... not to mention the fact that Richard asked us all to let him have it... good, bad, or indifferent
