I brought up Part I of my Nisai crop this morning. 217 fish today and the stragglers tomorrow. This group represents the first conscious effort to produce larger quality koi and away from the wholesale mindset. The results, for the most part, are as good or better than expected. It will take some time to appreciate and evaluate.
The weather was cool, overcast and a light rain fell mid-day. I had my best help on hand. This is my right hand man Hawley and my Daughter Emma. She was our audience for the pull and caught her first bullfrog. Not bad for a princess.
The pull went well and it took most of the day to sort through and transport the fish to the tanks. Our facilities for producing larger koi are ad hoc and within this group of Nisai were the Male brood stock. Two new ponds are being covered and prepared for this year's tosai which should influence the growth rate. Regardless, the growth was acceptable and the conformation good on most fish. Interested in seeing what can be done next year with larger ponds and lower densities.
My intention is to deal with two priorities here at the same time. I'd like to post pictures of the note worthy koi for your critique. I'll take what pictures I can over the next few weeks and gradually bring them forth for your review. A good chance for some of you to be as hard on my fish as I have been on yours lately. I'll post my thoughts as well. The other point of this thread is that Marie needs a fish. I promised her something special in gratitude for introducing me to this forum and so, with her permission, I intend to give her the fish of her choice from this pond. So your critiques will be helpful to me but should also be addressed to Marie. Let's have some fun with it and please no mention of any auction sites or the name of my farm. It's about the fish!
