No, I would not buy a Tosai Tancho. I would go for the Nisai!

But if you want to buy the Tosai, check how long it has been at the dealer. You might even want to make a deal and leave it at the dealer for a while, see if it is stable.

I would....and I did....have to say it worked out well. Paid somewhat more for a nice tosai, rolled the dice, and so far so good. Bought it a 7 1/2 inches....now about 18-19 inches. Sumi did receed somewhat over time, but coming back slowly and very strong. Tancho marking has always been super, and grown well with the koi. Sumi now starting to slowly appear on the tancho circle. The white was the best...never stresses and a very beautiful ground.
Entered in two larger shows (Portland and Seattle) over the years, and even though much smaller than competition, took first in it's size group both times.
As someone mentioned (I believe Dick) that as a nisai, a nicely developing Tancho, and especially a tancho showa like this one would have been much, much more. Guess my biorythems were right on the day I decided.
Photo from a year or year and a half ago at 15 inches...

I must be very lucky. I have a tancho sanke(probably domestic) and a tancho from Matsue that have not lost their red spot inspite of very rapid growth. One is sansai and the other is ake-sansai(sp?).

well, you asked us to state our opinions and boy did you get em! LOL...Looks like you'll have to flip a coin...but first you'd have to find one. We have several good domestic breeders who are represented/advertise on this board...why don't you drop them an email and ask for price and pics....I saw a few very nice tancho's at nisei when i was back there last month, and they just harvested the rest of their tosai ponds which i didn't get a look at. Yes tancho can be costly because they are genetically more of a rarity but if it's what you want, you should figure out a way to get one. I saw some very nice Toshio sakai tosai kohaku and sanke (tancho) that came in this spring that turned out well, and had no issues on their trip from japan......depending on what coast your closest to you might consider asking Russ if he has or can get some in from toshio....

The thread touched on "Tancho" Showa...If one is selected and it lost the tancho wouldnt you have a nice Shiro? If it were a tancho kohak, then I would say take a gamble. Everyones opinion is based on their experience with tancho. I have had 2 tanchos and the tanchos have maintained. You"ll never know until you drop one in your pond.
