Basically I said, that I understand the spirit of that pecking order line up in that sanke and showa need to get more right ( all 3 colors) But a good kohaku, even though it have just red and white, the standards and expectations are very high for this variety. So they must be really excellent to beat other kohaku and other gosanke. A showa, on the other hand is expected to be a tad off on one color and is still judged as 'complete' more or less. So in a certain sense, they are cut some slack that a kohaku could never get away with?
Still, I think this is why, when you count the winners of the All Japan, you see kohaku winning most followed closely by sanke and showa being the least frequent visitor to the winner's circle by far.
By the way, I hear from my spies in Japan that this years upcoming All Japan might very well be won by a showa ( in hidding!)!
Thanks, Jr. I mised the other post.

It may show in the pictorial the way the order is, but if you read the answer, he answers Kohaku, Sanke, Showa, Shiro Utsuri, Koromo, in that order.

Should be interesting JR, as I was told a certain Kohaku should be in contention as well.

Back a few years when Marilyn (kohaku) from daiinichi took the all japan show, I was invited to a q & A session folowing the show. I had been quite smitten by dragon castle, a matsunosuke sanke that was in the final running. So I naiively asked why a 2 color koi which was easier to finish should win over a 3 color koi which obviously needed more work with the 3 color. I never got what I felt came anywhere close to addressing the question, but it was obvious by the looks and facial expressions of the panel that I didn't have a clue, maybe would never get one, and the sooner they got on to any real questions the better. ( ah the joys of being "foreigner") Since that time, I have learned to better understand the difficulties of presenting a good 2 color as they actually are at a disadvantage, because with only two color to focus on the expectation is much higher.

To this day dispite the education, I still would vote for the sanke!LOL and like my numerous comments on this thread believe a good one is hard to find. I was able to pick up a very nice showa from toshio this year and have been truely impressed with their improvement. Hope JR's spies are right, would be about time to get a really nice showa as #1......

Then Showa - because I consider there to be more latitude with the placement of sumi than beni on a kohaku.

I tend to agree as Sanke is proving to be one of the hardest to produce. Kohak for me second and Showa third.

Funny thing is when I say the big 3 I usually say them in

Kohaku, Sanke Showa. To me it has more flow when you say it.. LOL
