I believe the 2005 Showa from Maruyama had enough notoriety/popularity that it was kind of the "people's choice" award. She had made her mark in many shows previous to the AJKS 2005. I doubt anything was going to deter the judges from voting the way they did.

I too was at the 2006 AJKS. There were rumors on Saturday morning that the maruten didn't come because it had some problems. I since have found out that, in fact, it did come. It was left on the truck. It came down to the last second decision as to which fish would be shown by SFF under the name of Martin and Mark. I think Sakai had the final say. Everything else aside, this pattern does not do it for me. However, in person, it was one of the most imposingly beautiful fish I've ever seen. As Ray states, her beni was unparalleled at this show. Actually one of my favorites was the Momotaro Sanke in the 85Bu(?) category. She got Kokugyo but I felt it should have been RGC. Just my HO.

Just an FYI to set the record straight: Martin & Mark did not purchase the 2006 Grand Champion from Sakai Fish Farms, they purchased her from Narita Fish Farms in Komaki, Nagoya.

This koi was bred by Sakai but was reared and conditioned by Narita.

Hi Joel,
Thanks for correcting the facts. I had forgotten they actually purchased from Narita.

Wasn't the Maruten Kohak also from Narita? I forgot about Narita and I was in Nagoya 3 weeks ago

What a view

It must be quite the view from that viewpoint. The article actually says M&M paid $150K for the Maruten that was runner-up in 2005. It is possible they went even higher for the 2006 winner. Sounds like Kentaro was going to buy Jessia Rose (Super Mask) back for half of what M&M paid Narita for it. In the deal they get the best two nissai from the spawn. Pick of the litter x two.

In addition, if you get a chance, view The All Japan Show 2005 DVD as well. It tells the back story to the 2006 show. In the 2005 show, the maruten kohaku had the most votes when the initial GC votes were taken. However it did not have the majority (over 50%) of the judges votes so the top 5 were selected and voted on. Again the maruten had the most votes but did not have the majority. The top two were then voted on and the maruten lost to the Maruyama showa.

I also have the Hiroshima Dreaming, an earlier DVD from New Vision, which introduces Narita Koi Farm and Sakai Hiroshima. If you watch the three DVD in succession, you'll notice that the later DVDs get more and more "produced". There's more of an entertainment factor to the later DVDs and part of that is the theory and politics involved. These theories are clearly the opinion of the producer but I liked it. I think it adds a little to the entertainment value of the DVDs.

Contact info

Might as well tell the folks how to get the video. email: home@newvisionproductions.com It is 14.99 pounds.(Brit money)

As a footnote. At the end of the article he says Noriyuki Tubamoto a flamboyant koi collector and Japanse government councillor has vowed to bring the title back to Japan. Would be interesting to know which breeder he is planning on using.
