MoiKoi,

who said anything about force feeding? It's about picking the right Koi and good husbandry skills.

JR- I almost always refrain from actually posting the "fill out the profile" message. BUT sometimes...I gotta. Moikoi is a name I've seen at Shack, but I can't fill out more than that.

Grow out contests involve a close to even start, nearly equal fish from the same spawn, or breeder at least, sold to participants to keep in their own ponds as a measure of the keepers care and the breeders growth potential. Remember Momo is all about growth. (Let the shelling begin.)

Over feeding doesn't lead to better growth. Over watering may.

Ahhh! I can't believe it, YOU are Moikoi?! Small world! LOls

Force feeding and over feeding is the American way!! I think we all want to treat our koi like they are in the drive up window at Mickey D's!

Truthfully, the Japanese consider feeding koi an art form. Seasonal and controlled with a huge amount of protein and calories at only one time of the year.
The message unfortunately gets messed up due to the practices of the grow out mass producers and, of course, the language barrier.

I'm doing a little harvesting of my own this weekend and I hope to post some pictures of a seasonal grow out experiment- please stayed tuned. Best, JR

Not me JR.

I've loved the stories I've been able to read of the Old Dads who spend their days fixing food for the koi and feeding them pond after pond and then around again.

About the closest I get to that is making some gel food.

I had my hand in an online koi growout contest.. It was pretty intersting to see the mixed results in everyone's skills to grow them out. Some went for pure growth and some went for better quality and growth. The Kohaks used were from Momotaro spawn and grandparent eagle. The contest was spread across the Nation with many mixed results due to different growing seasons. Some of the Kohaku's went down real fast and some held up really well with good growth and still obtained pretty good quality. Some went to shows and did very well.

The Kohaks that went for super growth taxed the beni out and some showed just how much this bloodline could stretch. Quality went down though for sure...

It was interesting to see all the different foods many fed as well.

Joe
