You know thats interesting. My water temps slowly dropped to about 45 already and they still are active and begging for food . Goes to show its not so much the temp but how rapidly it drops.

Ray & Jim: Very interesting points...and deserving of a separate thread! I've noticed the same behavior as Ray. In fact, early in the Fall when there was a 5 degree drop into the low 70sF the koi went off their feed for a day. Once they adjusted, they were more active than before. It is the sudden change rather than the temperature itself that causes the koi to react. I have come to appreciate more than ever the importance of avoiding fluctuations if possible.

Now boys , get back on task.

Funny thing.....on one of the bonsai forumns ( no I don't remember which ) this same subject came up. They even went so far as to imply it was the beginning of the downfall of American bonsai. Talk about kneejerk reactions.......... Anyway I don't see any significance in a drop of less than 7% in any hoby and my old ( very old if the SOB is stillalive ) stat professor would agree. If the " decline " continues for a number of years that will be significant.

I remember, not so long ago, that it seemed as if the Koi world was going to come to an end with the new import restrictions. I am still waiting......... The AKCA will be fine.

Sorry about my previous post. I honestly wasn't trying to 'hijack' the thread, just thought it might need a 'pause'.

My comment on the decline, or supposed decline:
I rather think it is cyclical, like anything. Maybe just a chance to look at it as an opportunity, not a problem. The opportunity should be for those of us still active in our clubs to reach out to other states/AKCA clubs and do some support/encouragement activities. Sometimes I think it is just a matter of club members (in those semi active clubs) not having the time or resources to continue.

Ray, get the heater. Or maybe buy some little winter coats for em , in case of those Texas chills.

John Hawley-

You burst through the door here in an awfully rude fashion. Apparently you had some points you wished to make and no amount of confrontiveness nor holeyness was off limits for you.

Rapidly though you are learning to respect the pace and thoughtfulness of the group of folks who are Koi-Bito, no finer group anywhere. Thank you.

Welcome. Happy to have your comments to read. I should be able to go back now a read threads you've posted in with a little less, ummm, pissedoffedness.

As always feel free to post pics of the pond and fish. Because mine are just a half a nick above crap I show large amounts of respect to those here and elsewhere who have fine collections and make the humble effort to show them.
