Since your relatively new to the board, and i haven't gotten a chance to get a sense of who you are thru your posting this is just a quess but from your discription about caring for a koi with something amiss in physical make up or acceptable pattern, your probably just someone who loves, the less loveable.
Meaning you have a soft spot in your heart for things that don't quite fit in and a a desire to care for them. Which is totally commendable. I think the best koi keepers are those that genuinely adopt their charges as part of their family.

the asagi pic that accompanies my posts( has distinquished my love of the color variety) pretty much looks like most other asagi's. The pattern doesn't vary too much from one to the other. My newest koi, a 6 step kohaku with unique head pattern is probably more distinctive from a pattern standpoint.

When I'm looking for a koi, I'm attracted first by the pattern. Then I have to
confirm quality. then the real test for me is the koi's personality. I like a koi
that carries itself well, and has a strong will. The last kohaku I acquired, when you first put her in a confinded viewing area seems to say by her actions, ok...here's the dog and pony show and she will placidly swim around and look pretty. If you keep her in there much more she starts to indicate her annoyance, by swimming into the side of the tank and looking like she might bail. I like a koi that is strong spirited, not meek and mild.

a friend of mine who posts here and I have had this strong spirited conversation before, and he always laughs and reminds me that just about every asagi he's ever met is that way....you don't suppose there is something about this trait that attracts me to them do you? LOL!

well im relatively new to the koi scene and i have much to learn. i dont get how people say its quality or say that the koi is unique. all kois are unique in some sense dont you think?

i have a coupe if white tancho with a black dot instead of an orange or red spot. they have a perfect circle and it sits high on their head. i also have orange ones with black dots. how do i know they are quality??

theyre unique to me

Quality has "standards". Beauty doesn't need them, because it really is in the eye of the beholder. We have several fish that are not high quality by any means, but they get the same loving attention as the highest quality fish in the pond. "Technically" they are not beautiful but "Personally" they are... but only to us.
I think one of the problems a lot of new ponders have is the expectation that others will see their Koi in the same way they do. Sometimes people post a picture of a truly UGLY fish that they love as a pet, and then get offended when someone points out its flaws. Bottom line... love your Koi, but don't be surprised if someone else may not.

good question birdy. when i first seriously started the hobby, i wish someone answer that question to me, then hundred of koi have not been discarded by buying what i see is beautifull then. Over the years, the more i study koi, the more my taste changed. to now only Gosanke get my attention. Once you watch enough of it you probably have the same taste like many hobbyists. then from that point, you will see color, patern make up for all the beauty of them, thanks for all the member in this forum, some even point out clearly what is beauty, what is not. Scroll down in this forum, you will find many many thread point to you in that path. it's fun.

I have to post from only leaving a week and a half which to some may seem pathetic. But I have something to say about this. Your post is so remarkable that it made me realize that koi have personalities. And you for instance, are attracted to koi that have something common with you. pretty much what I am saying, you share the same personality as your koi may have. I think that is something special not everyone can do. I dont think I can ever do that. You are really a great hobbyist along with so many others here.

Everything in this world is unique, all are awesome phenomena. There will never be a human just like another, another fish like another, another plant like another. Another rock like another.

Your post has given me some insight in my development and hopeful future in the hobby. I am very immature in the koi hobby, and have so much to learn. I just need to study koi more.
