Mojo: I'd be careful with the approach you are taking with the Sumi of koi D. I understand your reasoning, but I'm not able to say it is applicable to koi D. Sumi is often apparent over the Hi plate when not visible in the shiroji. This is due to there being a greater concentration of pigment cells in these areas. (I believe it has to do with the "white spreading" gene JR has discussed, but I'm not the one to try to explain it.) In time, Sumi may arise in the shiroji, or may not, according to the genetics of the individual koi. (Sometimes Kage Sumi appears on a permanent basis.) Over the past couple of years I have posted questions about this on several boards. I've gotten a wide variety of responses based on koikeepers' individual experiences. In other words, it is not a good idea to make assumptions based on Sumi appearing over the Hi plate.
