Green Lasers

I thought it might be useful for some of you who are bothered by Herons and other fish eaters to know that green lasers are an effective harassment tool. You can pick one up relatively cheaply on ebay as pen pointers ranging from 5mW to 200mW. Careful though. Green lasers are far more powerful than your common laser and can cause permanent eye damage. I have a 70mW laser mounted on a gun scope that allows me to effectively harass Egrets and Herons as far away as 300 meters. The gun sight is recommended for daytime use since at this distance the green dot is very hard to see. You will know when you have a positive hit by the reflection back off the birds retina. It's a passive approach that packs a wallop.

It's theoretically possible Russell but the net result in My experience is that Herons won't stay long enough for that kind of damage to occur. Once exposed they become very cautious which means less opportunity to catch fish. When one considers the other alternatives it's nice to have one that is effective and yet leaves the bird unharmed. If you have acres of ponds, a laser in the glove compartment is a nice alternative. Or, a laser pen in the kitchen is nice to have when you see a Great Blue Heron stalking your best fish.
