Dark babies

They start out dark, but not exactly black. Sort of a dark gray. I have a few pictures of some young ones, mixed in with some other spawns. I think they were about 6-7 weeks in first picture. I didn't raise a lot, but got some Shiro Utsuri, Hi Utsuri, Ki Utsuri, and some Showa.

Talking Thanks Guys

Turned my back for a few hours and SHAZZAM!
(of course it might've been fun if I could've told Carl his mom wore army boots so he could tell me his dad was bigger than mine... oh well, maybe some other time )
I appreciate the feedback thusfar and hope for more. I'm really missing JR too. I hope he's doing OK.
I do take special note of Ray's comments about the changes and outcrossings that have taken place, but it is also worth noting that some of the more successful inovators have reintroduced Black Magoi and White Magoi genetics to help strengthen the bodies on both black and white base Koi in recent years. That adds something to the mix that I haven't seen hashed out in terms of Color, only in terms of growth potential and genetic vigor.
Hey Clay! Your idea of a thorough necropsy sounds like it should be very informative. If it works out I'd really be interested to hear about your observations. We'll toast the results with a nice dark brew .

I just want to emphasize how helpful and informative this type of info is to novices, such as myself.

Thanks, again.

Out of hiding!

Larry, I've always thought of the modern showa as a white bodied koi, only because that is what they actually look like. So sue me.

I've also listened and rolled my eyes as JR rattled on about genotypes and phenotypes...but, ya know, he's right. Its a history based but also genetically valid distinction. Although, a showa may appear as a sumi-heavy sanke, it took a very different route to get there.

Messrs. Childers and Jordan have already explained it better than I, so I'll leave it there.

Have I mentioned I'm off for Golborne in the morning? You jealous yet, Steve?

Ten-four. I'll see that a picture of a certain sanke gets taken.

Marvelous idea as I sit here with an Oatmeal Dark Stout by Breckenridge brewery out of Colorado. It's about 3:00 am local time and I just finished work and had to see what was added to this thread. Here is a very nice chart that was from this site: http://www.japan-nishikigoi.org/gene...DE2B364C762B56#
I think that it explains the history that Ray was speaking to better than I could ever atempt.

Steve you sound like a lucky man with a nice fish on the other side of the world. Now having the daughter on the other side of the world that might be something else indeed. I'm sure that Tim and friends are keeping her out of trouble, or is it the other way around???
