i have a 375 gallon pond

i have 375 gallon pond and affraid my fishies are gonna start jumping out when they get bigger. its really long and wide...8 by 4 foot. i had them in a 100 gallon pond when they were barely 2-3 inches big and i lost about 3 of them from jumping out. do they stop jumping out when they get bigger and fatter? i know they jump out becuase of bad water qulity and space. right now i have about 7 koi. the biggest one is around 6-7 inches. but the rest are barely 3-4 inches. so should i buy a net and cover it? i wont be upgrading the size anytime soon.

The only way to solve that is everything you mentioned. Bigger pond and better filtration.

I don't want to sound mean or anything, but with a puddle that size you should consider keeping a few goldfish, only.
The end result of attempting to keep 7 koi in that small pond cannot be good.
Sorry....

Fish just dont jump for nothing and sure as hell they dont jump because the space is that tight. Test your water to see if there is somthing wrong with it.

This is not an effort to be a jerk, KHoffman, nor to encourage foolishness, KoiKiller. If you have a limited budget and limited space, real limits, not laziness, there is no reason you shouldn't be able to keep seven koi in a 375 gallon koi pond. Koi Pond. Not waterhole. And, of course, not easily nor optimally.

KoiKiller are you ready?

And BTW, your profile is empty. Maybe you could add a small amount of info about yourself to your profile. KHoffman is a recognizable name to many of us, yet she has put info into hers. We can therefore know that for her location 3' depth should be adequate for her fish in winter and if she is not coastal, if she is in them hills, 3' may be good enough for summer also. As a KHA she will have already deepened her pond if needed. Depth is Big I Important. How's yours, KoiKiller?

At 8' x 4' he must have an average depth of 18".

Well, Russell, if he's a guy (we don't know yet) he may think his pond which is 6x3 is 8x4.
That could mean his water is 2 1/2 feet deep. Or it could mean the water is only 200 gallons, hard to say.

No matter what direction he turns he will need to learn quick- get a handle on just how much water he's got, just what he's going to do with winter, and where the poop is going to go. He has a chance to miniturize some very effective DIY filtration and be successful with the small pond until the situation improves.

Do you have any small systems left in your store?

One is limited to their budget. I dont think anyone should dictate another, I think all they could at most do is recommend. In this case, pond size, and filtration methods.

LilDude-

I made an assumption that he, like you, may have some restrictions on how much he can influence pond size and the pond budget. Smart and cheap and resourceful and industrious is something to be. (Working class hero) And nobody can tell you not to. He can do it. I asked him if he was ready and I believe he will understand the question. We do not know the answer yet.

Yes, I agree. He came here asking for advice, there for he is wanting some advice.
but I do think it is wrong to critize people of their methods of doing things in the koi pond world, because like you said, doing things how everyone does it, is expensive. I am not saying you have done it. I have seen it done to people on this forum, not by you. but others.
