Way more cues than just a vent are neccessary for me to feel any confidence in my guesses. With only the pics of the vents I say they are "I dunno" and "female". Was the first fish wearing an earing? Left or right or both?

The first picture looks like a more mature 2-3 year old as compared to the second picture. If correct, I'd "guess" that pic 1 is a male and pic 2 a female (but not as matured). Of course, while I had them "flipped", I'dd "attempt" to "milk" both. The problem is that at this time of year, you may not get anything out and in the case of the second pic, if my "guess" is correct, not getting anything may not mean anything either since the Koi's vent indicates that it may not have reached sexual maturity yet.

All just guesses, based on the pictures and I am typically wrong when guessing from pictures!

Steve
Steve I honestly don't have the answer. Alvin Au was looking at both of those fish, he was told they were both female, well him and Frank flipped them and tried to milk them, but at this time of year, they did not get anything out. Alvin and Frank both agree with your conclusions. But the dealers employee, says they are 100% female. So I told Alvin, I will post the pics and see what everyone else thinks. Well I still no answer to give Alvin, except that you agree with him and Frank.

I'm certainly no expert in sexing fish, but will venture a guess. Personally I feel the 1st one is certainly female (the one with the ulcer starting). The other may be female, but a bit immature for me to tell for sure. The vent on the 1st fish seems swolen much like a female. It would be better if we could seen a photo taken from above so we could see the pec fins extended and the body shape.

KB goes porno!

Nancy,

The first is clearly a Male. The second looks to be Female, but one that has been underfed. A good secondary picture for a fish in this condition would be from the side. You're looking for any swelling of the the Genital pore. There are occasions where a fat Male will have the look of a poorly conditioned Female, but 98% of the time, any swelling of the genital pore indicates a Female.

Isn't it interesting how we talk about quality koi in such masculine terms when they are all females, and in this case who has the bigger unit? Maybe not so interesting? Please stop me.

A male’s vent tends to be elongated or triangular in shape. There may be an elongated genital papilla on the rear portion of the vent opening. A female’s vent is more round. As the spawning season approaches, the female’s vent will begin to protrude and take on a convex instead of a concave shape.

My guess - two males; but it's really too cold to tell.

The one you are referring to as a male is a female, and it has anchor worm bites, not ulcers. When fish are in mud ponds they get anchor worms. When they are brought up the anchor worms are removed, once the anchor worm is removed it leaves a bite mark so to speak. That is what you are seeing. I am sure a few of your new girls will have anchor worm bites, but you may not even see them by the time they get out of QT at Genki.

Well, I have to check out these fish this weekend. Tell Kenny I want my opinion. I've been told the deal about the triangle and they both seem to have that. I'm guessing male. How many of you have bought fish that the dealer swore was female and....?
