Maybe that pond can be put on " Americas Most Haunted Places "

BTW has anyone else looked at the varities of discus fish available lately. I wonder how many of those were suprises that found new names. I've long suspected that many of the more unusual varieties of koi are the same thing...comercial sucesses that would have been culled before the crazy Americans showed up.

I believe they became named "ghost koi" because they are so plain and dark you do not see them in a pond until they grab food at the surface...a sort of invisible koi. LOL

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, someone has revived the name from a previous line that went basically extinct after the late 60s early 70s. They were then called "Henge Ghosts" and were basically as described. Most were crapagoi back then. They were mostly a dark grey or brown color matsuba type scalation with metallic white or yellow on the head, fins and down the dorsal line. There were a few very nice specimens that competed in a show I was at in the early 70s. In fact, it was one of the first two koi I ever owned which were brought back from Hawaii in 1964. The other was a Yamabuki Ogon. I'm guessing here, but I believe they were the precursor to the gin matsuba we see today.

Regarding resilience and throwback genetics, I think this may be more complicated than need be.
Ugly fish don't die. That makes them good for ponds. (HUH?) A certain gentleman from Iowa has proved this. Where the heck is Greg anyway? People root for the underdog and so, Fuglys are Favorites.

Long live Bicklegoi !!!

In all fairness to Greg, however, not too long ago I saw some pix of his koi on another board -- and the guy's come a long way, baby.

He loves his fish and he's done an incredible amount of work to get from beginning back yard breeder to where he's at today. Sakai and Momotaro may not feel threatened, yet, but one has to give the lad the props he's due.

Last word Don was that Greg had a chance at some real acreage, so he may be pushin dirt now so that soon all the world can have an incredilbly hardy fish.
