Happy 73rd Birthday, Steve . . .

I, too, look forward to opening my Christmas presents tomorrow morning.

As for your beautiful tosakin, Wow!

Question for you, kind sir: Does the traditional crock method you mentioned employ gravel in the bottom to simultaneously boost SSA whilst providing the necessary nooks and crannies for proper fermentation of pond pudding?

Don, the traditional Tosakin crock has nothing but fish and water. Ideally, there is enough light to have green water. In the water exchange, about 10% is held back as an inoculum to be sure the water turns green again. Most of you are not big fans of green water, but it really does wonders for goldfish health, growth and color. In addition, the green water sucks up ammonia as fast as it is produced and the nitrogen waste is discarded as algae cells in the water exchange.

Like many, my tosakin bowl is in the house and does not get enough light to make green water. The roof is translucent but usually covered in leaves and there is a large tree above that.

LOL. Check RafflesGold for photos. Da guy Geert said I should throw them all away and start over. They will be old enough to travel in a few weeks. Another spawn today.

Stevehop kins . . .

thanks for explaining water management in a tosakin crock. Didn't know that. Wish koi keeping was as low tech. Well, with a water garden it pretty much is, isn't it.

Oh, and if I haven't mentioned it already, I hope you had a Merry Christmas yesterday.

And I might as well send Happy Birthday wishes your way for when you turn 81 next week.

Those guys at Rafflesgold are more serious about Ranchus than with us in Koi....I'll check out the site to see what they are saying....Good luck with the next spawning!!!

Tony

p.s. I got a Ranchu tank all setup for this spring, 240gallons fiberglass and 18inches deep....Should be perfect.
