Thanks, Karl . . .

glad to see you posting on 'Bito and doubly glad you've brought your experience and expertise with you -- this thread has already benefitted from your contributions.

I posted the URL to Dr. Porter's website earlier in this thread but there's nothing like having you interpreting it for us. Thanks!

I'm honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as Dr. Porter.

My veterinarian was kind enough to assist me. We traded off so he also was able to do some practicing. Terrific guy. Thanks for sewing the slings. Some modifications and we'll be there!

Hey Karl, The sling looks pretty cool. I have seen a plain white towel used for this as well. That is what Dr. porter uses.. Now where are your scrubs?

Just off of the phone w/ Dr. Porter

Bottom line fist, serum testing for anitbodies (tithers) is not temperature specific. Once the Koi has produced these, they remain and the count slowly drops off over time.

Now, that being said, Koi that have been exposed and moved to colder water "may" take longer to produce the antibodies (he used the term 2 weeks), but as Drt. Porter stated this would be very unlikely the case since it is very likely that this time frame would be met during thge distribution cycle.

I'll be talking with Vickie V on the subject as well in the near future and see where the inconsistencies are or if its just a case of mis-interpreting what she said by others.

Horse's mouth

The best information always comes from reliable sources. I was instructed by Vicky in person, at the Koi Health Seminar at UGA that the best, and preferred, protocol for serology samples sent to her should be followed in this manner:

-Heat the Koi at 74 degrees for 2 weeks
-Take blood samples from live specimens
-Place samples in a serum-separator tube
-Place samples in centrifuge and spin 10-15 min.
(depending on mfg. instructions)
-immediately freeze samples
-overnight to her at UGA

I know my customers will feel safer when I have used the best possible protocol for testing, so I do not consider doing anything less...
