Well it tends to happen when the spine starts to curve as the fish gets bigger. Lumps also happens too as the fish gets bigger too and older.
In the pics all three fish are at the top of competition condition. This means from comformation and overall quality. Any fish at this level of competition with a disfigurement will not do well even if the overall quality is great.
