For a new ponder I personally think having the ability to expand is key. Lets face it. You build your first pond and by the end of the first season you are drawing up plans on how to make it bigger

Any Newbie reading this post needs to accept that fact BEFORE you start digging... leave room for "next".
Our filtration is not standard by any stretch because of the long stream bed. At the pond waterfall we have an aerated vortex feeding a crossflow tub full'o'mats and a bag of lithaqua (70gpm). At the head of the stream there are 2 trashcan trickle towers with lavarock and lithaqua (also 70gpm). The stream itself has large rocks for looks, sound, and aeration, along with plants adding to the filtration mix.
Bottom line for me is really just a repeat of what has already been stated. You must have enough filter for the pond/fishload, no matter how big or small that may be.
Oh yeah... NO ROCKS IN THE POND!
