Updated Photos of Fish from Quality Koi

We bought a new camera (a good one finally) and took some pictures of our fish we are overwintering inside. They are the last two fish we bought last year from Quality Koi. The sanke is about 10" (in Sept was 8") and the Kohaku is about 11-12" (end of Aug was 8" and was the raffle fish from MPKS Show). We are only feeding them wheat germ right now and they are in our basement that doesn't have the greatest light. They are in about a 750 gallon tank turned over 3 times/hour. The kohaku is my pick and the sanke is my wife's pick. The kohaku has the better body right now and it definitely eats more.

Nice fish.

Upgrading the lighting will help them with both growth and color. There are some tips in this thread if you're interested:

2 nice looking fish.

I agree, for now I like the Kohaku better. Keep posting pics as they grow.

Things are going nicely Marc. A couple of quick comments. On the lighting you can buy cheap 4' shop lights for $10 to $15 each and then put full spectrum lighting bulbs for plants in them. You can buy those bulbs at Wal-Mart no less for abouit $8 each. So 3 X $15 for the lights, + 6 X $8 for the bulbs = $93. Less than $100 with tax included. You can't touch metal Halide for that and you will have a very nice indoor lighting.

Your fish are doing well indoors. I love the kohaku, but also look at the sanke with interest. I have read many times where the color of the hi on the head will match as the fish matures. I like the soft persimon color on the sanke's body right now and look forward to it matching the head in the years to come.

Congrats to both of you on the indoor progress.

quality koi does an excellent job of producing koi. This year i picked up a kohaku and ochiba from Mat and Ross.

I think your kohaku has an attractive pattern but actually I like your wife's choice. I think the bigger the sanke gets the more you'll appreciate it.

light is always a big concern. Some day I want to build a greenhouse like the japanese breeders to house my koi. I run full spectrum lights in my enclosed winter time facility but it's a poor second to natural light.

good luck with your choices, next year you'll have to select one of his ochiba babies. Ever since i seen the mom 2 years ago i wanted one...Chris C who posts here got a tosai at harvest that was to die for....a gin rin to boot!

These koi have nice patterns, but what stands out to me is the body shape. Will that shape hold as they reach more than 26"? Looks to me that it just might. ...battleships in progress?

Body is the first thing we always look at. We think these two have some potential to hold their shape as they grow. We don't look at the pattern as much until later other than to see if we think the pattern has potential. The biggest thing we are trying to do is to look for future development. We like to show and want to see what our koi keeping skills will give us in the future.
