While you guys are talking shipping. I need some help. I keep trying to improve my technique and not too long ago ran across a reference to a water additive commonly used in Japan to reduce stress during shipping. I believe it also had some antibacterial benefit? Sounds herbal to me. Ring any bells?

Hi Richard,

It might be El Bajin(sp), if it is, it is an antibacterial. We have it. I also use Chlor-AmX to control ammonia during shipping.

Yep, it's Elbagin (sp)!! I use it and I love it!! Just a small pinch in the bag along with a little dechlor goes a long way in aiding the fish during transport. I even use it in my soft sided transport tank when we travel with fish. Good stuff!!

Used with salt at 10 grms per ton of water, it can aid in ulcer problems as well. This saved a young Kohaku of mine over a year ago where no antibiotic would touch it. The ulcer was so bad it ate right through the muscle wall and you could see her insides. This was recommended. I used it according to the instructions offered and within 2 weeks she was well on the mend. Last summer she took Young Champ in Chicago!! She's looking really good!!

rrc94: I would very much like to know about koikeeping in Cyprus. Are there many people with ponds? Do you have to import pumps and filters yourself, or is there a business already established thay supplies pondkeeping equipment? What type of pond do you have? ... That's enough questions to start.

RRC94-

Thanks for the info on your location. If you can, go to User CP and add a couple details...Nice. Should we call you RR, Mr. Royce? Please, maybe give answers to MikeM's questions. I know I haven't read posts from anyone on Cyprus before. Wait where's that big squiggly fiberglassed pond? It was on an island. Mediteranean?

I've gotten boxes of tosai from Japan that were in transit for 32 hours, partially because they couldn't be released until AM so sat overnight in the warehouse. I rebagged them and then drove them another six hours home. Yes, it was worrisome. No there were no deaths and no problems.

They were packed a little light I think- 45, 13-15cm per box. Is that light Russell?

Hi Mike, from what I am aware of there aren't that many people with ponds in Cyprus. Even though Oase does have a distributor in Cyprus they don't have a large selection of pumps and filters in stock. Oase is the only one I know of with distributors in Cyprus.

I actually order all my equipment off the internet.

Curently I have 2 koi ponds/pools. One is a small informal pond of 1,500 gallons filtered with 2 Oase Filtoclear 15000 using 2 Aquamax 12000 pumps.

The other is a more formal koi pool of 5500 gallons with 2, 4 inch bottom drains feeding a settlement chamber were one Oase Promax 30000, pumps water to an Oase Biotec 36 filter and one Oase Aquamax 12000 pumps water to a filtoclear 15000 which then feeds a Momotaro Bakki Shower.

I also have 2 Aquosis Vat 20 quarantine pools running all the time just in case of emergencies and also for my new arrivals!

Hope that answers your questions!

Cyprus.... Cool I suppose no one expected you to say that.

There has to be a way RR to get you what you want. It sounds like you have done your homework though I was able to find nonstop flights from Europe, including several major cities (London, Frankfurt, etc.) that have high some quality koi dealers nearby. Airlines available to you that I have successfully used to import koi include British Airways. So you should be able to use them too. Your koi could be imported there first, rested, then on to you. Definately doable. Or you could try brininging them right on, but that way is more fraught with risk. Hope that helps

rrc94: Everyone is going to want you to get some Japanese-bred koi. There is no better way to spread the hobby than having koi produced at the source of the hobby. Some of the best dealers in the world are in Germany, Netherlands and England. They will know what to do to pack your fish well and with plenty of oxygen. You will need to check out any laws about importing live fish, etc. Perhaps some of our board members in Spain, Italy and Greece will come along and have real experience to share with you. Keep us up to date.

I would not be scared to tell anyone on this board where I was located, members here are so into koi, seems that is all they think about. But other places like chats and such I would never tell them my true location as most of those people are nuts.

Also I hope a few of the members here this spring will give me there address so I can pratice shipping some of my koi this spring. You gotta learn and this is part of it right guys?

Hi Mickey,

Yes, that is light. We get ours 75 -100 per box, but the boxes are 32" long.
