Seine Nets---Where to get 'em and what kind to buy....

Well, it's long past time to move the sarassas out of the koi pond and one koi into the QT for a fungus treatment and I can't catch the buggers for nuthin'. Water's too cold to pick them up by hand (which I've done all summer long just so they'd be easy to catch and handle. Ha!) as I shiver so much it scares them. Chasing them with a shallow 15" skimmer net all over a 4000 gallon pond that's 3/4 covered for the winter really is an impossible task, but I really have to get these fish out (and the one QT'd and treated) before the tigerlily comes home.

What makes a good seine net for koi? Materials, size, etc.

Anyone know of a good establishment to buy a good seine net that would be adequate for a 7' x 18' x 4' deep pond? Anyone have one they want to sell or trade off? How about a loan of one? I'm good--unlike the people I've loaned books to, I WILL return it post haste. Anybody wanna come up here and help me catch 'em before my friend Bubba takes a turn at it? (I'll have to tell you Bub's koi catching story later *L*)

AES doesn't have much selection. The people above are the ones to go to for seines.

Betcha Bek Ko is right when it is time for a siene for the Persimmon ponds, but isn't the problem now a bit trickier? 17 x 8 x 4 and 3/4 covered? You should be using your koi net with a 9' handle and it would still take all day for the little fast goldfish. A siene will be near impossible to use with the cover on.

I do have 2 of AES's sienes. One is the cheapest and is the cheapest. One was only slightly higher in price and works just fine for my ponds. Bubba wil have fun with his end.

Perhaps what you need instead is a trick. Come out at night with a flashlight and your skimmer net. Might be easier to net them when they are asleep. I know, I know, sounds goofy but it works.

I may have to dupe them all like I did Jumanji this morning. It would be a lot easier if the water were warmer and they were actually hungry. Only thing that helped with noodling the Ju is that s/he actually likes to be touched and s/he's been itchy lately. I've had the bucket in the pond for days getting them all used to the sight and smell of it. Fed 'em once in it, too, laying it sideways in the water. So this morning when Jumanji docked in my hand for an itchy rub, s/he got a gentle bum's rush into the bucket.

One hand frozen. One fish caught.

I still need a seine, though. Even if it's to block off the covered 3/4 end of the pond behind the backs of slowly foraging fish on the open end. From there I can work them to the edge where catching them should be alot easier.

*tangent*

I wonder...do the nets come in designer colors?

For a pond that small a good 30in dia koi net might work better especially during the winter
