I have heard that koi have different grades, like A grade, B grade and so on. What grade koi is this? What is this koi worth? What type of koi is it?

It is a Hi Shusui. What size is? It looks like it is 6" - 8". If it is, it should be priced in the $25.00 - $50.00 range, depending on where you are and who you are dealing with. I don't go by A grade or B grade and so on, so I really couldn't tell you. We grade Tosai at low, mid or high quality.

There is no standard for grading koi. The "Grade A", "AA", etc you will see at various dealers is simply their way of separating and pricing what they have in stock. One dealer's "Top Grade AAA" tosai could be another's "Grade B". There are no short cuts to developing your own eye.

The koi pictured is pond grade. Which would equate with Russ's low grade. I'd say $25.00 would be a fair price for him, especially since we know nothing of it's breeding and thereby potential future development. I've always liked Hi shusui's but could never find a high quality one with good scale alignment.

I agree, the grades are only meaningful when used by two individuals doing business on a regular basis. However, it was also a handy way to communicate before it was possible to send digital photos back and forth. The AA will be better than the A grade sent last week, but not as good as the AAA grade sent last month.
