Looking at those pics, wondering if mud ponds ever freeze over? Have seen many pics over the years, seems like ponds remain fluid, maybe slush but not frozen. Do any of our KB posters have a 'take' on this?

yep they freeze over! LOL..remember a few years back when kato-san was having some of his own mud ponds freezing up while he was trying to harvest
his koi for a show. They had drained the ponds half way the day before and then a snow storm and freezing weather hit that night and the havoc it created. Some ponds they tried to refill to protect the koi from dropping temps and some ponds they tried to drain to get the koi out...pretty hard stuff for a 90 year plus koi hobbyists to say nothing about what happened to the koi.

when the earthquake happend some of the breeders resorted to letting some of the koi go back in the mudpond over the winter. I am not sure of all the koi but I know of one that survived through the winter. That pind by the way froze over..

Beautiful photos!!

Dick, getting snow like that here would be worse than the last power outage. I heard yesterday there are still some without power here.

I remember when younger back in Wisconsin we had to walk 10 miles to school in snow just like that.....and bare footed too!!! haha

well I'm glad your position in life has improved so that you now have proper attire for your feet! LOL. too funny....When I first moved into this area a few decades ago and started building my japanese garden we used to get a lot of snow back then. Often I would stay up all nite with a broom sweeping off the snow load from my trees so as not to break the branches. I lost a few but fortunately as the trees aged, they recovered.
