| Weird Winter: To Fast or Not to Fast Well, I began fasting the koi on Christmas day. A 6-week fast does them good. But, this year the weather is not cooperating at all. Today it was in the mid-80sF, and the pond water temperature is in the mid-70sF. Usually by New Year's Day the pond will be in the 60s... sometimes even the low 60s. This evening the overnight low will be in the mid-60s ... but that's the air temperature! and tommorrow is predicted to be 84-85F.
A few days ago, I was getting uneasy about fasting when JR placed an excellent post on NI that reinforced the importance of imitating a winter season, even in Florida. But, it keeps getting warmer. So, my will power is giving way as the koi tell me that it's time for lots of food. I'm compromising, following a suggestion made by JR--- Instead of a complete fast, I'm feeding a one-half portion of sinking wheatgerm pellets once every other day. It is not much food, but it is something to move through their digestive system with the algae they are scrounging and a complete set of vitamins, etc. The hope is to have the same overall effect as a fast, without stressing the fish.
I have no idea how this will work. It's a weird winter.
