Russ, great lessons you passed along thank-you for the accompanying photos. One of the lessons in selection from the master i learned was the longer it takes something to get there the better chance it has of sticking around longer. tategoi koi are like the ugly duckling story that grows into a graceful koi. I think most americans are too used to wanting something too quickly.Maybe It's just our culture: instant satisfaction! 8 years is not a long time to wait to see your dream showa come to fruition. Most of the koi sold, that i see go out the doors at the dealers are about 85% there and will probably be completed in one year. Sorry to see your trip come to an end,
and thanks again for your graciousness to share the experience. Well the way I see it...is T minus 30 days AND COUNTING!!!!!!! Have a safe trip home.

Russ: Your Sakai lesson should be a separate thread. Excellent. Wish I could be at the upcoming event.

Dick: Makes me want to get back to New Jersey!

Beni Development

We had the opportunity to ask Toshio many questions. We have always been tought that sumi develops from the back of the Koi to the front and that beni develops from the front to the rear.

We asked Toshio if he agreed with the statement on beni development. He responded by saying that wherever the beni is on a koi, it will develop within itself. That the development should be uniform with each of the hi plates. There isn't a progression from front to rear or from the rear to the front.

Thanks Mike,

We will try to cover the seminar and post as much information as we can so that people, like yourself, can still enjoy the information with out being there.

Russ, Thank you very much for the detailed travelogue. I can imagine that your travels must be quite busy, hectic, and tiring... and yet you manage to post these nice updates for us which I looked forward to each evening. Thanks a lot.

All I can say is WOW. Wow. wow.

- Wayne, gotta have more fish soon.

Thank you Russ

Your posts are a real asset to this forum. Thank you for your generosity in making these images available to all of us less fortunate.

What strikes me the most about Toshio's showa is how the texture of the fish has become almost cloth like. Did he comment on how his breeding has led to thinner, finer scales and how this relates to the elasticity he referred to?
