Stop Feeding

I agree with Mitten about the air. I would keep the pumps going as much as possible. No feeding. We had this problem in California a few years ago and it is very frustrating. We stopped feeding. The electricity problem lasted on and off for about a week or so, the it happened once more after that. Good luck!

Thumbs up

Thank you everyone - I really appreciate all the support and advice!
In your head you KNOW what needs to be done - but somehow you just need to run it by others to make sure that you are going to make the right decision.

I was toying with all kinds of decisions - Ponds 1 and 2 and the tanks are not debatable - as I can not separate the filtration lines - but I was considering whether I should sacrifice a filter line on Pond 3 and 4 , and keep the others going. Then I was playing with should I try and just do oxygen in the pond and sacrifce all the filters and then get lots and lots of enzymes to reseed them. Then I was playing with should I stop feeding the fish...... you know how it goes - this all runs over and over in your mind - it can drive you crazy debating all the options.......

But I am going to go with Mitten one the "air, air everywhere" and hopefully everything will be OK! I think if the filters run properly for +- 3 hours and then get air for +- 3 hours etc - everything will be just fine! I was just having a "wee little panic"!!!!

This sucks - if "karipeters" could get through this I am sure I will! I think I just got at least another 4 grey hairs........

THANKS A MIL EVERYONE!!!!!

Julie, you are going to have some worries about the sand filters maybe. Do you have sand in them, or 2mm-5mm gravel, or bioballs? Sand? Take them outta the loop for sure. If the news doesn't change...dump the sand. 2mm-5mm gravel? (ala Chris Neaves) Circulate small amounts of pond water in occasionally, but not back to the pond, trying to keep them alive. Bio balls? Drain the tanks, they'll be fine in 5 days, just start them back up. Rinse anything that makes it through so no water that has deteriorated goes back to the pond.

You can use a little fuel and a little pond water to keep your open filters OK, but if you are not running them constantly they do present a little worry of getting skunky and puky, Or, kaka if you prefer. It is the crud in the bottom that is worrisome. If you can dump everything to clean it you can nurse things along. Damp, or wet, and shaded is a workable way to get open filters through. Closed filters are tougher to nurse. How good is your valving?

Give fry new water as well as air. Little additions of water. Lotta air. Shade?

Stop sweating. It's just a horror and an emergency, that's all. Like Jackson said, we'll all pray for you. Be strong.

Test the H2O!

Don't forget to test the water for ammonia. Don't let it get above .1 ! Good Luck!

last year when Rita comes to town, we lost electricity in 12 hours, my pond is 1500 gallon, have 42 fish in it ranging from 10 to 20". i stop feeding completely and spray water over the surface to make air buble. All fish come thru easely. check your population density and compare with mine.
